Overview

This standard is concerned with the installation of Telecoms equipment and cable/wiring systems. It includes a range of industry standard Telecoms equipment (including telephone systems and hosted solutions) and associated cable systems, including optical fibre cable, shielded twisted pair (STP), unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and co-axial cable/system wiring.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Review the proposed digital telecommunications equipment requirements, plans and specifications in line with organisational standards
  2. Arrange access to the site according to organisational procedures
  3. Obtain tools and equipment as per the bill of materials according to organisational procedures
  4. Install digital telecommunications equipment following organisational safety procedures
  5. Test that the digital telecommunications system meets the specified requirements
  6. Update documentation with details of installation and test results in line with organisational standards
  7. Complete all documentation in line with organisational standards

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. The principle theory of telecoms transmission
  2. The factors involved in installing telephone systems, and voice over network IP (VOIP)
  3. How to connect digital telecommunications equipment and wiring using connectors and terminators
  4. The role and purpose of industry standard Telecoms equipment
  5. The role and purpose of protection equipment
  6. The need to earth telecoms equipment
  7. The relevant test equipment to use when testing new telecoms installations
  8. The relevant legislation, codes of practice and organisational policies and standards
  9. The organisation's safety procedures for installing digital telecommunications equipment and wiring
