This standard is about the process of radio visualisation; creating visual content to accompany radio and audio content and help engage audiences consuming audio on a range of platforms and devices.
This standard is for those who create visual content for use with radio and audio content.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- select equipment to capture original visual content for use in radio and audio
- set up and check equipment and settings and where necessary carry out a white balance
- capture still or moving images in the appropriate medium and format to create visual content for radio and audio use
- monitor technical quality against quality requirements during the capture process
- check that sufficient and relevant content for the intended purpose is recorded
- confirm that visual content from existing sources is in appropriate formats
- cut, edit and caption video content using industry standard video editing tools
- crop, edit and resize static images using industry standard image manipulation tools
- save visual content in the format for its use in radio and audio productions
- compress assets to meet requirements
- produce visual content that takes account of the conventions and limitations of the platform or device for which it is intended
- deliver visual content to deadline, and within any budget limits
- label assets and content according to protocols
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the basic brief for the visual content; editorial and creative intent, target audience of the radio or audio content and platform
- how to obtain the required visual content; whether from existing sources or original capture in appropriate formats
- the basic principles of photography, film or video making, in terms of image composition and framing and the variety of shots needed for editing purposes
- how to check and test equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions
- when and how to carry out a white balance check
- the use of basic lighting techniques
- the operating characteristics of various devices able to capture still or moving images; and the limitations of the equipment at your disposal
- how to keep yourself up-to-date with the latest technology and developments relating to radio and audio visualisation
- how to use industry standard image manipulation tools
- how to use industry standard video editing tools
- the quality and other implications of different codecs and compression rates
- the appropriate protocols for saving and labelling assets
- the timescales for sourcing, capturing and editing visual content for radio and audio use, and where necessary, the budget
