Wrap and pack goods in logistics operations
Overview
This standard is about wrapping and packing goods as part of logistics operations. It includes identifying suitable materials for the goods to be wrapped and packed, using tools and equipment safely and correctly, and wrapping and packing goods in accordance with requirements. It also includes labelling packages, disposing of waste materials, and maintaining health, safety and security.
When working with equipment and machinery you must be appropriately trained and hold current certification where required in line with relevant legislation.
This standard is relevant to all operatives who wrap and pack goods as part of their job role.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. maintain the health and safety of yourself and others at all times, in line with the relevant legislation and organisational requirements
2. assess the risks associated with the work before starting and throughout the activity, take action to minimise risks where possible or report in line with organisational procedures
3. confirm that the required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the work being carried out is worn at all times in line with organisational procedures
4. confirm that the relevant training has been received to carry out the work, recognise the limits of your competence and seek access to further training where required
5. maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out the work
6. confirm that the goods being wrapped and packed match the order specifications
7. use the relevant tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and organisational procedures
8. select suitable wrapping and packaging for the goods, in accordance with the order specification and organisational procedures
9. protect the goods while they are being wrapped and packed
10. wrap and pack the goods using the required materials and minimising wastage
11. produce finished products which comply with the packaging specification and required quality standards
12. label the wrapped and packaged goods with the required information
13. dispose of different types of waste materials in accordance with relevant legislation and organisational procedures
14. deal effectively with issues that arise within the scope and limitations of your responsibilities and competence and report issues which cannot be resolved, in line with organisational procedures
15. maintain the work area in a clean and tidy condition throughout the activity
16. complete the required documentation in line with relevant legal requirements and organisational procedures

1. your responsibilities under the relevant health and safety legislation and organisational requirements
2. how to identify hazards and assess risks associated with the work being carried out, and the suitable control measures and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) that can be put into place to reduce risks
3. the relevant personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be worn when wrapping and packing goods
4. how to identify and access the required information about the goods being wrapped and packed
5. the roles and responsibilities of colleagues and why it is important to maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out your work
6. the types of wrapping and packing material used in the organisation and what they are used for
7. the relevant tools and equipment used for wrapping and packing goods and how to use them safely and correctly
8. how to wrap and pack different types of goods without damaging them
9. how to minimise the wastage of wrapping and packing materials
10. how to check the quality of the packaged products against the required quality standards
11. the issues that may occur when wrapping and packing goods, the actions to take and the organisational procedures for reporting issues that cannot be resolved
12. the information and recording systems used by the organisation and the legal and organisational requirements for maintaining records, including data protection legislation and organisational procedures for data security
