Manage the use of resources
Overview
This standard is about managing the use of resources in your area of responsibility. Resources may include equipment, materials, workspace, systems, services and utilities.
You will need to identify the resources required to carry out the work and plan how to ensure they are available. It also includes monitoring resource use to improve performance, as well as monitoring the environmental impact and ways in which this could be reduced.
This standard is relevant to all those who are responsible for managing the use of resources as part of their job role.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. maintain the health and safety of yourself and others at all times, in line with the relevant legislation and organisational requirements
2. identify hazards and assess risks as you carry out the activity and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), where required
3. confirm that the relevant training has been received to carry out the work, recognise the limits of your competence and seek access to further training where required
4. identify the range and quantity of resources required to carry out the work in your area of responsibility
5. identify developments and the use of technology likely to affect future resource requirements
6. consider the environmental impact and sustainability when identifying resource requirements
7. consider ways of reducing, re-using, sharing, recycling or improving the use of resources
8. identify the availability, demand and cost for these resources in your organisation
9. identify the factors that could affect the use of these resources
10. plan how resources could be better used to meet business needs in your organisation
11. follow organisational procedures to obtain the required resources
12. optimise the use of resources to achieve a balance of usage and performance
13. maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out the work
14. inform colleagues of their organisational responsibilities in relation to the use and care of resources
15. monitor the quality of resources and patterns of use in line with your organisation's requirements
16. monitor the use of resources to identify any positive or negative effects on the environment
17. maintain and store the required records in line with relevant legal and organisational requirements

You need to know and understand:
1. your responsibilities under the relevant health and safety legislation and organisational requirements
2. how to identify hazards and assess risks as you carry out the activity and the requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE)
3. how to identify and access information relevant to the required work
4. the types of resources required to carry out the work in your area of responsibility
5. the use of technology in your area of work
6. how to identify the availability, demand and cost of these resources in your organisation
7. the roles and responsibilities of colleagues and why it is important to maintain effective communication with colleagues when carrying out your work
8. the factors that could affect the use of resources in your area of responsibility
9. the organisational procedures for obtaining resources
10. the methods for optimising resources
11. the importance of communicating the requirements for resource usage to colleagues
12. the types of problems associated with the use of different types of resources
13. the sources of information on relevant legislation and regulations affecting operations, including environmental legislation
14. the methods used by the organisation to monitor the use of resources
15. how the use of resources could be improved in your area of responsibility
16. the information and recording systems used by the organisation and the legal and organisational requirements for maintaining records, including data protection legislation and organisational procedures for data security
