Overview

This standard is about producing costs for freight transport. 

It involves consideration of the freight to be transported, the collection and/or delivery points, and the driver and vehicle requirements in order to calculate costs. It covers managing any special requirements for the care of the load during transport and the loading and unloading of the vehicle.

This standard is relevant to all those with responsibility for producing costs for freight transport as part of their job role.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1.    maintain the health and safety of yourself and others at all times, in line with the relevant legislation and organisational requirements
2.    identify hazards and assess risks as you carry out the activity and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), where required
3.    confirm that the relevant training has been received to carry out the work, recognise the limits of your competence and seek access to further training where required
4.    comply with the policies and procedures of the organisation and the relevant legal and organisational requirements relating to the transportation of freight
5.    obtain job details for the freight transport 
6.    confirm freight transport collection and delivery point details to determine the distance and other associated costs
7.    consider additional costs that may be incurred when transporting freight
8.    identify and confirm the operational requirements and any constraining requirements of the loads to be transported, to assist with producing costs
9.    identify driver and vehicle requirements for carrying out the transportation of freight, to assist with producing costs
10.    obtain information on the physical loading and unloading facilities available at collection and delivery points and identify and cost any specialist equipment required for loading and unloading
11.    maintain effective communication with colleagues and customers when carrying out the work.
12.    collate and record the information obtained and prepare costs for the freight transport
13.    complete costing documentation for freight transport and communicate costs to the customer

1.    your responsibilities under the relevant health and safety legislation and organisational requirements
2.    how to identify hazards and assess risks as you carry out the activity and the requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE)
3.    the sources and points of contact for information on the movement of freight
4.    the type of load and characteristics of the freight to be moved, and how this affects costs
5.    additional costs that may be incurred when transporting freight and the need to include these in costings
6.    the types of vehicles to be used for carrying different loads and how this affects the costs of the job
7.    when specialist equipment is required for loading and unloading the freight and how this affects the costs of the job 
8.    the organisation’s policies and procedures and the relevant legal and organisational requirements relating to freight transportation
9.    the constraints and conditions relating to the movement of freight
10.    how to prepare the different types of costs and causes of fluctuations in the costings
11.    the terms and conditions affecting the calculation of costs for transporting freight to customers
12.    the importance of communicating with colleagues and customers involved in the freight transport
13.    the information and recording systems used by the organisation and the legal and organisational requirements for maintaining records, including data protection legislation and organisational procedures for data security
