Overview

This standard covers carrying out delegated care activities that are within the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability to assist the registered practitioner in the delivery of perioperative individual care. This will involve assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of perioperative individual care.

All actions and decisions should be carried out in accordance with current legislation, organisational policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards

Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in assisting the registered practitioner in the delivery of perioperative patient care

P2. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their consent, privacy, beliefs, and dignity

P3. collect sufficient valid and reliable information to assist the registered practitioner to assess the care needs of the individual

P4. feedback information you have collected to the registered practitioner at the agreed time

P5. use the perioperative care plan to identify the timing/frequency of your activities to meet the identified care needs of the individual

P6. provide care to the individual in accordance with organisational procedures

P7. monitor the effects of your activities and promptly identify, and report changes in the individual's wellbeing/status to the relevant member of the care team

P8. assist in the review of the perioperative care plan

P9. complete all relevant documentation required for assisting the registered practitioner in the delivery of perioperative patient care


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1. the current legislation, local guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

K3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information

K4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability

K5. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these

K6. how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual

K7. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others and the potential consequences of poor practice

K8. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent

K9. the needs of individuals and carers including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy

K10. specific care needs of the individuals that you provide care for

K11. how an individual's care needs may change according to the stage of the procedure, including pre-operative; operative; post-operative

K12. the effect of anxiety on the emotional state and behaviour of individuals and how to recognise signs of distress

K13. methods of monitoring individuals' ongoing care needs, safety and wellbeing

K14. methods of providing support and reassurance to individuals who are undergoing clinical procedures

K15. the care provided to individuals who die during clinical procedures

K16. sources of information and how to access and use them

K17. how to collate and assess information from a number of sources to determine individuals' care needs

K18. methods for checking and confirming the accuracy, validity and reliability of information

K19. how plans of care may vary for different individuals, scheduled and non-scheduled procedures

K20. sources of information and advice that are available if there are any problems or uncertainty regarding plans of care

K21. the importance of following agreed plans of care, and of reporting significant deviations from them

K22. circumstances which may require plans of care to be revised and the process to do this

K23. the purpose of providing feedback to the registered practitioner to assist in the evaluation of perioperative care plans

K24. how to complete all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements reports required for assisting the registered practitioner in the delivery of perioperative patient care
