Overview

This standard covers carrying out delegated care activities that are within the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability to assist the registered practitioner in the support, care and monitoring of individuals before, during and after clinical procedures within the perioperative care environment. You will be working under the direction of a registered practitioner. This standard does not include you taking measurements of physiological parameters.

All actions and decisions should be carried out in accordance with current legislation, organisational policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards.

Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in assisting in the support and monitoring of individuals within the perioperative care environment

P2. communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs

P3. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their consent, privacy, beliefs, and dignity

P4. provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times

P5. effectively monitor the individual's needs and wellbeing at all times, paying close attention to any areas of particular concern, as highlighted in the plan of care

P6. encourage the individual to express feelings of discomfort, pain or distress

P7. minimise factors which may cause undue stress or distress to the individual within the constraints of the setting and the procedure

P8. pass relevant information on the individual's needs and care to other members of the care team who will be involved with them

P9. complete all relevant documentation required for assisting in the support and monitoring of individuals within the perioperative care environment


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1. the current legislation, local guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

K3. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions and information

K4. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability

K5. how to adapt communication styles in ways which are appropriate to the needs of the individual

K6. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others and the potential consequences of poor practice

K7. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent

K8. the needs of individuals including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy

K9. the importance of checking individual perioperative care plans prior to commencing support and monitoring activities

K10. the importance of both verbal and non-verbal support to individuals undergoing clinical procedures in the perioperative environment

K11. the ways in which individual rights and choice may have to be restricted because of the nature of the perioperative environment and procedures

K12. the effect which individuals' personal beliefs and preferences may have on their behaviour and attitude in relation to the perioperative environment settings

K13. the effects of pre-medication and sedation on individuals, and the difference re-medication makes to the support, care and monitoring activities required

K14. how perioperative settings and procedures may cause stress and distress to individuals and how environmental factors which cause stress and distress can be reduced

K15. the signs of individual distress, how to support individuals who are, or who may become, distressed, as well as the importance of close observation and the need to report any concerns without delay.

K16. how to complete reports and records required for assisting in the support and monitoring of individuals within the perioperative care environment
