Prepare vehicles for the transport of materials and/or equipment within the health sector
Overview
This standard covers the checking and preparation of vehicles for the transport of material and equipment on public roads.
The vehicles could include articulated vehicles, coaches, vans, minibuses or cars.
Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in preparing vehicles for the transport of materials and/or equipment within the health sector
P2. check all relevant aspects of the vehicle accurately and confirm that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition for the journeys to be undertaken
P3. top up or replace all vehicle consumables when they are not at the required levels, or in the required condition
P4. check and confirm the suitability and condition of specialist equipment, tools and materials
P5. remedy any defects or faults in the vehicle or specialist equipment and materials where possible
P6. check that materials and equipment, which are to be transported, are correct and complete
P7. identify correctly any shortfall in, or damage to, materials and equipment and report to the appropriate person
P8. load materials and equipment correctly into the vehicle, and store and secure them correctly and safely, ensuring their stability is confirmed before the vehicle is moved
P9. demonstrate safe moving and handling techniques at all times
P10. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
P11. complete all relevant documentation required for preparing vehicles for the transport of materials and/or equipment within the health sector
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions, legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols needed to prepare vehicles for the transport of materials and/or equipment within the health sectorÂ
K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
K3. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
K4. the hazards and risks which may arise during the execution of your work role and how you can minimise these
K5. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
K6. the basic maintenance and repair tasks you can carry out and those which you should refer to others
K7. the different types of material which may and may not be transported together
K8. how to identify hazardous substances
K9. how to safely transport hazardous substances.
K10. why loads need to be stable before vehicles are moved, and how to check load stability
K11. the sort of specialist equipment, tools and materials needed for different processes and how to check whether they are working properly and are suitable for the load(s) to be carried
K12. the particular storage requirements for items which are temperature-sensitive and what to do if these requirements cannot be met
K13. how to check, top-up and replace vehicle consumables, and how to check vehicle systems recognising actual or potential problems and faults.
K14. how to report faults and problems and what information to include
K15. how to carry out basic maintenance and repair tasks within your responsibility
K16. how to load and secure materials and equipment for transport
K17. how to move and handle items safely, including using lifting equipment, lifting with another person, avoiding repetitive movements
K18. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures, legal, policy and procedural requirements and best practice
K19. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
