Conduct routine maintenance on clinical equipment
Overview
This standard relates to the performance of routine preventative and/or first line corrective maintenance activities by the user for equipment within your own working context. It ensures that clinical equipment in use remains safe and fit for its intended purpose. You can use the standard for each type of equipment within the scope of your normal work activity.
Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in conducting routine maintenance on clinical equipment
P2. prioritise action based on maintaining clinical services
P3. notify all issues affecting the required preventive and/or first line corrective maintenance and their impact on delivery of services to relevant others
P4. assess decontamination status and requirements of the equipment to be maintained
P5. run appropriate tests to assess operational status of equipment
P6. carry out maintenance activities:
a. in accordance with schedule and organisational requirements
b. using appropriate reference materials
c. to within correct parameters for intended purpose
d. using appropriate test equipment
P7. report any instances where the maintenance activities cannot be fully met or where there are identified defects outside the planned schedule
P8. check equipment is functioning against expected operational parameters to confirm operational status
P9. confirm that equipment is ready for intended use
P10. notify appropriate others of the status of equipment on completion of planned maintenance
P11. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
P12. complete all relevant documentation required for conducting routine maintenance on clinical equipment
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions, legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols needed to conduct routine maintenance on clinical equipment
K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
K3. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
K4. the correct use of any equipment and PPE to protect the health and safety of you and others
K5. the intended purpose of the clinical equipment
K6. the requirements for routine preventative and/or first line corrective maintenance for specified equipment, including frequency
K7. the peripherals required for the optimum functioning of the equipment
K8. the infection prevention and control requirements and decontamination procedures as they apply to equipment and environments
K9. the expected performance parameters, principles of operation, capabilities and limitations of specified equipment
K10. the technology used in the equipment being maintained
K11. the safety implications and correct procedures for handling the technology used
K12. the factors affecting decisions on maintenance activity including urgency, time, impact on services, other available equipment, risks
K13. the type and range of records required for maintenance of equipment and the types of tests carried out
K14. fault and error message diagnosis and appropriate actions
K15. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
K16. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
