Overview

This standard relates to first line calibration of specific equipment prior to clinical use. Individuals will be able to calibrate equipment for use in their own healthcare context. Individuals can use the standard for each type of equipment within the scope of their normal work activity.

This is not intended for use following major repair or service.

Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in performing first line calibration on clinical equipment 
P2. assess decontamination status
P3. run appropriate tests to confirm the operational status of equipment
P4. calibrate equipment for operation:
       a. using appropriate reference materials
       b. to within correct parameters for intended purpose
       c. against appropriate approved standards
       d. in line with required schedule
       e. using appropriate test equipment

P5. verify accuracy, precision and operational effectiveness of equipment following organisational procedures
P6. correctly identify equipment that does not meet calibration standards and take appropriate action to prevent inadvertent use
P7. confirm that equipment is ready for intended use
P8. notify appropriate others of the status of equipment on completion of calibration
P9. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
P10. complete all relevant documentation required for performing first line calibration on clinical equipment


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions, legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols needed to perform first line calibration on clinical equipment to ensure it is fit for use 
K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
K3. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
K4. the intended purpose of the clinical equipment 
K5. the importance of both accuracy and precision within calibration
K6. the methods of first line calibration and quality assurance
K7. the infection control requirements and decontamination procedures as they apply to equipment and environments 
K8. relevant reference materials
K9. the significance of keeping calibration documentation
K10. how to check for validity and reliability of tests conducted
K11. the common faults in equipment and relevant corrective action
K12. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
K13. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements and the types of tests to be carried out
