Provide care for individuals recovering after endoscopic procedures
Overview
This standard covers the care of individuals after they have undergone endoscopic procedures. The condition of the individual has to be monitored, especially taking into account the effects of sedation. The individual requires support, information, and assistance during the recovery process. The individual has to be checked to ensure that they are aware of their situation, and that they are ready for discharge
All actions and decisions should be carried out in accordance with current legislation, organisational policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards relevant to endoscopic practice.
Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in providing care for individuals recovering after endoscopic procedures in accordance with organisational protocols and recovery team procedures
P2. communicate with the individual and key people at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to the individual's understanding, preferences and needs
P3. ensure infection prevention and control methods and personal protective equipment are used
P4. respect the individual's rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs, and dignity in line with consent and workplace procedures.
P5. provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
P6. confirm that the individual is ready to be moved after the endoscopic procedure. and prepare a suitable environment ready for their recovery in accordance with post-procedure recovery protocols.
P7. situate the individual and facilitate positioning to maximise post procedural comfort, and allow for individual post procedural monitoring as required, following manual handling guidelines and ensuring the individual’s dignity.
P8. monitor the condition of the individual during the recovery process, and respond to any issues accordingly.
P9. deal promptly and effectively with any problems within your control and report those which cannot be solved
P10. provide the individual as appropriate with:
a. access to facilities
b. refreshments if appropriate to do so
c. all relevant information on the next steps in the process and any follow up arrangements
P11. make the appropriate arrangements for transport and escorts when the individual is recovered enough for safe discharge
P12. complete records and reports required for providing care for individuals recovering after endoscopic procedures

K16. how to situate and position the individual in a dignified way which minimises any pain or discomfort
K17. how individuals respond to endoscopic procedures
K18. the role of different types of agencies in providing an endoscopy service
K19. how to access current sources of authoritative information on endoscopic procedures and related issues
K20. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
