Overview

This standard covers feeding individuals using techniques other than oral feeding. These methods include Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeds, nasogastric (NG) tube feeds and subcutaneous fluid infusions. This standard does not cover intravenous techniques for giving fluids.

Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in carrying out extended feeding techniques to ensure individuals nutritional and fluid intake
P2. provide support to the individual, ensuring that you respect their rights and wishes relating to their privacy, beliefs and dignity
P3. apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control any other relevant health and safety measures
P4. check the individual's identity and the confirm the planned activity
P5. establish consent and access information on carrying out extended feeding techniques to ensure individuals nutritional and fluid intake
P6. work in partnership with the individual and others throughout the procedure
P7. confirm all equipment and materials for carrying out extended feeding techniques is appropriate to the procedure and fit for purpose
P8. ensure the individual is positioned in a way that will ensure their safety and comfort and facilitate the method of extended feeding
P9. ensure the feeding tube is in the correct position according of the type of tube being used
P10. carry out the extended feeding. 
P11. ensure the extended feeding is carried out at an appropriate time according to the individual's plan of care and using appropriate techniques
P12. use equipment in line with manufacturer's instructions
P13. ensure that the extended feeding is carried out in a manner which optimises the comfort and dignity of the individual and minimises pain and trauma
P14. observe the individual throughout the activity, recognise and report any condition or behaviour which may signify adverse reactions to the activity and take the appropriate action 
P15. ensure that there are adequate stocks of fluids, feeds and equipment and reorder as required
P16. ensure the extended feeding tubes are securely attached in a way that prevent discomfort and promotes dignity of the individual
P17. ensure the individual is made comfortable following extended feeding techniques
P18. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
P19. complete all relevant documentation required for carrying out extended feeding techniques to ensure individuals nutritional and fluid intake


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

 K1. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions, legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols needed to carry out extended feeding techniques to ensure individuals nutritional and fluid intake
K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
K3. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
K4. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
K5. the needs of individuals including issues relating to dignity, confidentiality, and privacy
K6. the importance of applying standard infection control precautions to carrying out extended feeding techniques to ensure individual's nutritional and fluid intake and the potential consequences of poor practice
K7. the anatomy and physiology of the gastro-intestinal tract pertinent to the feeding methods being undertaken
K8. the types of pathogens specific to the upper gastrointestinal tract
K9. potential sources of contamination when undertaking extended feeding techniques and appropriate measures to reduce or deal with them
K10. the potential consequences of contamination of feeds and equipment used for extended feeding
K11. issues linked to individual's beliefs, values and faiths which influence and impact upon diet and nutritional intake
K12. the impact this type of feeding will have on individuals
K13. the range of conditions and situations where feeding may be undertaken by extended methods
K14. other staff who may be involved with the nutritional and fluid intake of individuals
K15. why fluid intake and balance is vital to the health of individuals
K16. the adverse effects and contraindications which may occur during and following and how to identify and deal with these
K17. how contra-indications may differ for different individuals, conditions and those from different ethnic groups
K18.  the equipment and materials required for the types of extended feeding techniques
K19. the different types of feed available for the types of extended feeding techniques
K20. how a variety of feeding tubes are put in place and the preparation of the individual for the procedure
K21. how to monitor, improve and maintain nutritional and fluid needs of individuals and the importance of doing so
K22. methods used to ensure the extended feeding equipment is correctly positioned prior to feeding
K23. the importance of following procedures for extended feeding techniques exactly as specified, and the potential effects of not doing so
K24. the importance of packing up used equipment and materials and covering receptacles containing body fluids prior to leaving the immediate care area
K25. how to dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
K26. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
