Overview

This standard covers the assessment of visual acuity as part of a health assessment for individuals of all ages.

Users of this standard will need to communicate effectively to meet individuals' needs and wishes and work in line with health and safety legislation, policy and practices.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in undertaking vision screening
P2. confirm identity of the individual in accordance with organisational procedures
P3. provide support to the individual and ensure health and safety measures are implemented at all times
P4. establish consent and access information on undertaking vision screening
P5. ensure infection prevention and control methods and personal protective equipment are used
P6. identify any additional needs which may affect the performance of the screening, obtaining assistance and advice to meet these needs in order to perform the screen
P7. refer individuals to the appropriate service if adaptations are required to undertake the screening
P8. use the appropriate equipment in such a way as to obtain an accurate result
P9. undertake vision screening in accordance with organisational requirements
P10. reassure the individual throughout the assessment 
P11. complete all relevant documentation records and reports required for undertaking vision screening


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1. how to access and interpret all relevant work instructions, legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols needed to undertake vision screening
K2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
K3. specific procedures for reporting issues which are beyond your competence, responsibilities and accountability
K4. the principles, practice and procedures associated with informed consent
K5. how to obtain positive confirmation of an individual's identity before starting the procedure
K6. the importance of applying standard precautions to undertaking vision screening and the potential consequences of poor practice
K7. the structure and function of the eyes
K8. what is meant by normal vision
K9. how to identify any additional needs the individual may have which may affect the performance of the screening
K10. the equipment used for vision screening and the importance of ensuring it is appropriately prepared
K11. the vision screening methods used
K12. the pre/post screening requirements
K13. how to complete and safely store all relevant documentation in accordance with organisational requirements
