Overview

This standard is based on the National Occupational Standards which involve the setting up and operation of glass manufacturing related equipment. The learner uses the equipment to undertake production activities. The learner is expected to be able to prepare the equipment for operation. The learner has to monitor the equipment during operation and identify any indications of malfunction or poor performance. In addition, the learner has to maintain the equipment, at least in the sense of keeping the equipment clean and clear from obstructions. It is not expected that the learner will have to undertake routine or emergency maintenance of the kind carried out by maintenance engineers.

This standard is for you if you work in the Fenestration and Glazing Industry and are involved in setting up and using glass manufacturing equipment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. obtain and confirm the health and safety regulations and procedures that apply to the operation of equipment
  2. identify what specifications are required to set up and operate equipment in line with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  3. communicate the type of operation to be undertaken in line with organisational requirements
  4. collect information on significant pieces of equipment and identify their use
  5. locate the appropriate SOPs
  6. record information on the preparation of equipment in the appropriate information systems
  7. confirm the appropriate health and safety requirements and procedures for the monitoring operations
  8. identify any indications of poor performance of the equipment and report where necessary in line with organisational requirements
  9. report upon SOPs to be followed in line with organisational requirements
  10. record information on the monitoring of equipment in information systems in line with organisational requirements and procedures
  11. confirm the appropriate health and safety requirements and procedures for maintaining the operation of equipment
  12. identify SOPs applicable to maintaining the operation of equipment
  13. identify the routine maintenance requirements to ensure operation of the equipment in line with specifications
  14. produce a report identifying typical problems and difficulties that could occur with the machinery
  15. communicate any identified typical problems and difficulties to relevant people in line with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. why it is necessary for individuals to receive training before preparing or operating equipment
  2. products of your organisation
  3. what equipment is available for different operations
  4. consequences of not starting up and shutting down equipment according to SOPs
  5. list a variety of problems that can arise when using particular equipment
  6. SOPs for dealing with problems
  7. why it is important to use information systems that are in place and describe what might happen if they were not used
  8. hazards that may be encountered and the risk assessments associated with the operations
  9. health and safety procedures to be adopted whilst monitoring the operation of equipment in line with regulatory requirements
  10. what control equipment is necessary for the monitoring operations to be carried out
  11. different monitoring methods that are used and explain if there are any alarm systems and safeguards in place
  12. indications that the equipment is not functioning in line with requirements
  13. why the equipment should be kept free of debris and other foreign bodies
  14. SOPs for monitoring the equipment
  15. what records need to be maintained on the monitoring of equipment in line with organisational and regulatory requirements and why this is important
  16. products and or materials manufactured or processed using the equipment
  17. functions of the different parts of the equipment that are being monitored
  18. how and why waste products or materials are recycled or disposed of in line with SOPs and regulatory requirements
  19. typical indications that operational capability has degraded
  20. routine housekeeping activities that are required according to SOPs and regulatory requirements
  21. limits of responsibility for maintenance operations and when it is necessary to call in a specialist maintenance engineer to repair a fault with the machinery
  22. usual range of problems and difficulties that can occur and how to deal with them in line with SOPs and regulatory requirements
  23. what emergency situations can arise and what action is necessary in line with SOPs and regulatory requirements
  24. what emergency start up and shut down procedures may be required
  25. what to do in case of a power cut
  26. actions that should be taken to correct different operating problems
  27. why it is important to record maintenance operations and explain what typical systems are used
  28. who needs to know about any problems and difficulties experienced with the maintenance of operations and why it is necessary for them to have this information
