Overview

This standard covers the installation of glazing and or panels into windows and doors, or conservatories, or curtain walling. These systems primarily relate to replacement windows and doors, conservatories, or curtain walling systems. The glazing and or panels have to be positioned and secured and sealed to ensure a weather tight fit in line with specifications. The work then has to be completed by checking that it meets all specifications and ensuring the customer's requirements have been met and that they understand usage.

This standard is for you if you work in the Fenestration and Glazing Industry and are involved in installing glazing and or panels.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times
  2. ensure drainage holes are clear and functioning
  3. fix glazing and or panels into apertures according to specifications and organisational requirements
  4. apply specified materials to provide a weatherproof installation
  5. ensure glazing and or panels function according to specification
  6. check that glazing and or panels are plumb after being secured
  7. remove all surplus materials from the work site and dispose, where relevant, according to organisational and regulatory requirements
  8. finish off the work according to the specified requirements
  9. check that the installation work meets all agreed requirements and has been agreed with customer
  10. answer questions concerning the work in line with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and organisational requirements
  11. restock any materials used that are necessary for further work
  12. identify any problems relating to the installation work and deal with them according to SOPs
  13. record information on the work in the information systems in line with SOPs

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. health and safety responsibilities and obligations for your role
  2. health and safety procedures that need to be followed in line with regulations and SOPs
  3. different types of installation material that are used
  4. how different types of installation material should be handled
  5. how to remove surplus materials from site and how, where relevant, to dispose of them according to organisational and regulatory requirements
  6. which type of materials need to be restocked and how to do this in line with SOPs
  7. methods for fixing glazing and or panels into apertures
  8. materials for weatherproofing different types of installation in line with specifications and SOPs
  9. why it is important to leave drainage holes clear and functioning
  10. how glazing and or panels should function and how to check that they do
  11. how to check that glazing and or panels are plumb after being secured
  12. what type of problems can occur with the installation work and SOPs are for dealing with them
  13. how to undertake an inspection of the installation work where required
