Isolate and earth contact systems to meet defined isolation requirements in the rail engineering industry
Overview
This standard is about isolating and earthing contact systems (OLE, Conductor rails) to meet defined isolation requirements in the rail engineering industry. This includes confirming the requirements for isolating and earthing, carrying out isolation procedures prior to undertaking the activity. The types of isolations may include: pre-arranged, urgent, short notice.
At all times you will be working to within the limits of your own responsibility and report any instances where activities cannot be achieved or where there is conflicting information to the relevant person(s) this may include following reporting, recording and escalating procedures.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 maintain safe working practices and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, directives, and guidelines
P2 source and interpret the relevant information relating to the contact system and the location of the isolation and earthing activity
P3 identify, analyse and determine the sequence of the isolation and earthing activities to be undertaken
P4 identify and confirm the required isolation and earthing methods and procedures
P5 carry out the required isolation and earthing activities in the specified sequence and within the timescales set by your organisation
P6 confirm the isolating and earthing activities have been completed within the limits of your own authority
P7 report instances of incomplete activities or identified defects beyond the planned scope
P8 complete relevant maintenance records in line with your organisation’s procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 the relevant health and safety regulations, directives, guidelines, and safe working practices and procedures as defined by your organisation
K2 how to source and interpret information relating to the contact system, including operational activity, if applicable
K3 how to identify and analyse the sequence of testing and earthing activities to be undertaken
K4 your organisation’s methods and procedures for carrying out isolation activities
K5 your organisation’s methods and procedures for carrying out testing and earthing activities
K6 the importance of carrying out activities in the specified sequence and within the timescales set by your organisation
K7 why and when activities cannot be completed
K8 the implications of not reporting instances of where the activities cannot be fully completed
K9 the relevant reporting lines and procedures that are approved by your organisation
K10 the limits of your own authority and responsibility and those of others involved
