Overview
This standard about maintaining a healthy and safe environment for air passengers and crew throughout all phases of the flight from pre-flight to disembarkation. This involves providing health and safety information and guidance to passengers and maintaining their compliance with these requirements, carrying out pre, per and post flight safety checks, identifying and dealing with hazards, and maintaining healthy, safe and hygienic working practices and procedures on board the aircraft.
This standard for members of the cabin crew.
When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:
• Maintain the health and safety of air passengers and crew
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. Demonstrate and provide the airlines routine health and safety information and guidance to passengers in line with your organisation's procedures
2. Confirm with passengers seated in emergency exit rows understand that they have specific responsibilities in the event of an emergency, and that they are happy to remain seated/sitting there
3. Instruct relevant passengers on the specific emergency procedures (e.g. those seated by emergency exits, mobility, sight or hearing impairments, etc.) and check their understanding of the actions they should take
4. Provide destination specific health and safety information to passengers as necessary
5. Confirm passengers' luggage and belongings are stowed according to the airline’s requirements
6. Promote and support passengers to comply with health and safety regulations
7. Take the required actions with passengers failing to follow health and safety regulations, in line with airlines procedures
8. Undertake pre, per and post flight safety checks and actions in line with the airline’s procedures
9. Identify breakdowns, faults or abnormalities in the aircraft environment and take the necessary actions to maintain safety and hygiene
10. Identify hazards and potential hazards and take action in line with organisational procedures
11. Keep passenger and working areas clean, clear and hygienic
12. Confirm that equipment and crew’s personal belongings are safely stowed and secured at all times
13. Confirm that access to emergency exits and equipment is maintained at all times
14. Record and report damaged, broken, faulty or missing equipment which may affect health, safety or hygiene and stop using it if required following the airline’s procedures
15. Follow airline procedures if you discover banned or restricted items that have not been identified by security checks
16. Deal with all categories of waste safely and hygienically in line with standard operating procedures and specific destination requirements, as necessary
17. Adhere to local health and safety regulations within the aircraft environment
18. Confirm that your appearance, hygiene and any identified/recognised medical condition meets relevant legal, regulatory and airline health and safety standards
19. Confirm your activities comply with all flight and duty time limitations (FTL) and rest requirements
a) Follow recognised manual handling procedures
b) Wear personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE) in the correct way as necessary / in line with standard operating procedures
c) Adopt the seated and secured position in line with standard operating procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
1. The routine, emergency and destination specific health and safety information and guidance during different phases of the flight and in different situations, including: pre, per and post flight
2. The relevant legal, organisational and destination specific health and safety regulations and guidelines
3. The airline’s procedures for carrying out pre, per and post flight health, safety and hygiene checks, inspections and operations, including recording and reporting procedures
4. How to assist passengers who have additional requirements or specific needs whilst ensuring your own health and safety in line with the airline’s procedures
5. The location and function of on-board health and safety equipment including emergency exits and fire protection facilities and equipment
6. The airline’s procedures for reporting crew non-compliance and the importance of following them
7. How to respond to passengers who do not follow health and safety regulations, including your legal rights and responsibilities in relation to carrying (or not carrying) passengers who are likely to put the aircraft and passengers and crew onboard at risk
8. The common types of equipment breakdowns, faults, abnormalities and hazards, and how to deal with them
9. How to recognise and store dangerous goods
10. How to monitor aircraft doors
11. The airline’s and destination specific procedures for dealing with waste
12. How and where to safely store and service equipment
13. The airline’s procedures for dealing with spillages
14. The airline’s standards of personal appearance and hygiene
