Overview

This standard is about monitoring and maintaining the security of people, stock, premises (inside and out) and cash as part of a daily routine in your retail organisation. As well as personally checking the security of the work area and resolving any problems identified, it involves making sure that staff are clear about their responsibilities for maintaining security and that they understand the security procedures they must follow.

This standard is for staff who have responsibilities for monitoring and maintaining security in the workplace.

When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

  • Monitor and maintain security in a retail organisation

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow your workplace procedures to monitor the work area daily to identify possible problems with the security of the following:
    • outside locations
    • inside the premises
    • stock and resources
    • people
    • cash
  2. follow your workplace requirements for maintaining security when opening, monitoring and closing premises
  3. identify problems with security and resolve them following relevant legislation and your workplace procedures
  4. follow your workplace procedures to brief and update staff about security procedures and their responsibilities for maintaining security
  5. follow relevant legislation and your workplace procedures regarding who can stop and search colleagues and customers
  6. contact authorities when security has been breached following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation

You need to know and understand:

  1. your workplace security procedures for opening, operating and closing your workplace premises
  2. the potential security threats likely to happen in your workplace for the following:
    • outside locations
    • inside the premises
    • stock and resources
    • people
    • cash
  3. how your workplace expects you to monitor and maintain the following:
    • outside locations
    • inside the premises
    • stock and resources
    • people
    • cash
  4. how to identify problems with security and resolve them in line with legislation and your workplace procedures
  5. different methods of briefing staff about security arrangements and when it is appropriate to use each method
  6. who has authority to stop and search staff and customers and how to contact the correct authorities
