Overview
This standard is about contributing to making your retail organisation safe for everyone who works in it or visits it. It is also about ensuring the behaviour of colleagues, customers and visitors is safe within your retail
organisation's requirements.
This standard is for staff who contribute to reducing health and safety risks in their workplace.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Contribute to reducing risks to health and safety in a retail organisation
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow the health and safety requirements laid down by your workplace and by relevant legislation, and encourage colleagues to do the same
- contribute to health and safety discussions and meetings and suggest ideas for reducing risks
- recognise actual and potential risks to health and safety in your normal work area
- take appropriate action immediately to deal with risks within the limits of your authorisation and ability, without putting yourself or others in danger, following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation,
- get immediate help from other people if you cannot deal effectively with the danger following your workplace procedures
- give clear information or instructions to other people to allow them to take appropriate action following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
- follow your workplace procedures to report fully and accurately to the appropriate person the details of risks and the action you took
- use equipment and materials in line with the manufacturer's instructions, your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the health and safety requirements of your workplace and relevant legislation and how to comply with them
- how setting a good example can contribute to health and safety in the workplace
- when health and safety is discussed in your workplace and how to contribute to discussions and meetings to help reduce risks
- typical risks and dangers to health and safety likely to happen in your workplace
- the limits of your authority and responsibility for dealing with health and safety risks, and the importance of not taking on more responsibility without authorisation
- your workplace's procedures and relevant legislation requirements for dealing with health and safety risks
- the details that you should record and report relating to risks, dangers and action taken and who to report health and safety risks to
- what can happen to yourself and others if equipment and materials are not used correctly in line with manufacturer's instructions, your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
- where to find instructions for using relevant equipment and materials
