When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Establish retail customers' requirements and provide advice regarding tiling products
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- establish where customers intend to use the tiling products and why they are being considered
- determine customers' budget and delivery timescale for the tiling products
- establish the nature of the surface to be tiled, and determine any consequent considerations regarding the suitability of particular tiling products and how they might be fixed
- identify whether customers require any fixtures or fittings and advise them accordingly following your workplace procedures
- establish how the tiled surfaces are to be used and advise customers upon the available types of tile suited to the intended use following your workplace procedures
- explore and determine customers' preferred colours, styles, design and layout of tiles
- provide customers with samples of appropriate tiles and displays according to their requirements and following your workplace procedures
- advise why certain styles may be better suited to particular types of homes
- advise customers regarding the relevant tiling finishes available, including appropriate trims and beadings following your workplace procedures
- determine whether retail customers are seeking other requirements such as underfloor heating
- follow your workplace procedures whilst establishing customers' requirements and advising them regarding tiling products
- listen actively and promote understanding by using words that are clear, concise and suited to customers' requirements following your workplace procedures

You need to know and understand:
- the different locations where tiles are used, the factors to consider when determining which tiles are suitable and why this is important when advising retail customers
- the relevant advantages and disadvantages of a tiled area compared with the principal other types of surfaces
- how to use questioning to establish customers' requirements regarding tiling products
- the constituent materials and general manufacturing process of the tiling products that your workplace offers
- the delivery times for the tiles that your workplace offers
- the implications of relevant legislation and sustainability for the tiles that your workplace offers
- the principal types of adhesives and grouts and what these are used for
- the principal types of integral fittings and accessories available and which can be installed during or after tiling
- procedures for cutting and drilling through tiles
- the reasons for possible differences in sizes and shading of tiles, and the purpose of batch numbers
- current trends in tiling design and fashion
- the types of tile fixing, trim and beading and those most appropriate for different applications
- the circumstances when it is important to use silicone sealants
- where to seek information appropriate to customers' requirements, particularly non-standard requirements
- how to follow your workplace procedures when advising customers on tiling products

- the principal forms of underfloor heating, and those floor finishes that are suitable
