Sell National Lottery products to retail customers
Overview
Playing the National Lottery is a form of gambling, and so is carefully regulated. Not all retailers who want to offer National Lottery products will be allowed to do so. Even when permission is granted, retailers must be careful to keep to the relevant legislation so they do not lose this privilege. This standard is about selling National Lottery products to customers in the approved way.
This standard is for staff who sell National Lottery products.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Sell National Lottery products to retail customers
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- use and maintain the service terminal in line with the operator's procedures
- keep to all relevant legislation and your workplace procedures for selling National Lottery products to customers, including vulnerable players and under-age customers
- explain the rules of the game clearly and accurately to customers when they ask following the operator’s and your workplace procedures
- explain clearly and accurately to customers how to play the game when they ask following the operator’s and your workplace procedures
- explain to customers clearly and accurately the differences between National Lottery products in terms of price, method of play and odds of winning following the operator’s and your workplace procedures
- process prize pay outs in line with the operator's requirements and your workplace procedures
- ask the correct person promptly for help when the service terminal is not working properly following your workplace procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the role of the operator in promoting the National Lottery
- the role of the National Regulator in monitoring how the National Lottery works
- why there is concern about vulnerable players
- your workplace procedures for selling, and refusing to sell, National Lottery products to vulnerable players and under-age customers
- the relevant legislation relating to the National Lottery and gambling in general, and how these affect selling National Lottery products to customers
- the features of the National Lottery products currently available, including price, rules of play, methods of play and odds of winning
- how to explain clearly to customers the features of National Lottery products
- how to compare different National Lottery products for customers
- the operator's procedures for selling National Lottery products
- the operator's requirements and your workplace procedures for processing prize pay outs
- the purpose of the service terminal
- how to use and maintain the service terminal
- who to ask for help if the service terminal is not working properly in your workplace
