Overview

This standard is about assembling retail products and testing them in the customer's home or other place of delivery. It involves helping the customer understand how to install and use the product initially. This is not a selling role, but opportunities should be taken to promote other products when they arise.

This standard is for staff who are required to visit customers' premises to assemble products. This may be the main role of the job or only part of it.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

  • Assemble retail products at customers' premises and assist with installation and initial use

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the exact place where customers want the retail product to be assembled and installed, from information they provide following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation requirements
  2. follow your workplace procedures to agree a suitable place for assembling the retail products if customers' chosen place is not suitable
  3. check that all the basic features of the retail product are working properly following your workplace procedures
  4. follow your workplace procedures to explain and demonstrate to customers clearly and accurately how to use the retail products and their basic features
  5. follow your workplace procedures to provide clear explanations if customers require more help in understanding how to use the retail products
  6. inform customers about any sources of information they can consult concerning the retail products following your workplace procedures
  7. follow your workplace procedures to promote additional or associated retail products to customers where appropriate
  8. follow your workplace procedures and any relevant legislation requirements to behave appropriately in customers' premises and represent your workplace positively
  9. follow your workplace procedures and relevant legislation to protect the health, safety and security of yourself and others at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the information you require about your customers’ premises prior to attending and how you check its suitability following workplace procedures and relevant legislation requirements
  2. how you check that all basic features of the product are working properly
  3. how to assemble and install retail products at customers' premises
  4. The relevant legislation and how to protect the health, safety and security of yourself and others while assembling retail products
  5. the sources of information and advice that customers can consult about the retail products installation and how to use them
  6. the associated or additional retail products that can be promoted to customers
  7. how to judge when it is appropriate to promote associated or additional retail products to customers following your workplace procedures
  8. how to behave appropriately in customers' premises and represent your workplace positively following your workplace procedures
  9. how to explain the features of retail products in ways that customers can understand
