Overview

"What is this standard about?
This standard specifies the skills, knowledge and understanding required to demonstrate competence in the operation of mobile plant such as a ride on roller or compactor designed to compact ground, soils, waste or materials within extractives and mineral products settings.
Who is this standard for?
This standard is applicable to any person operating plant to compact. 
This standard does not apply to the use of road rollers to compact bituminous materials for the construction of roads, paths and other hard standing areas. This function is covered by NOS Unit COSVR376 ""Operate and control operations of road plant or machinery"", from the Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services (Construction) suite of NOS."


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. conduct your work in line with relevant regulations, legislation and safe working practices to maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace
  2. interpret the given operating information relating to the use of plant and confirm its relevance
  3. communicate with others and work as part of a team when operating plant to compact
  4. identify the hazards and risks associated with operating the plant
  5. select, check and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the work activity
  6. protect the work and surrounding area to prevent damage, maintain a clean workspace and dispose of waste in line with safe working practices
  7. identify the work area and the materials to be used for the compaction operation
  8. carry out pre-operational checks for obstructions, changes in stability, safety and security of the work and surrounding area
  9. check to avoid damage to structures and utility services
  10. work within your own level of competence and seek assistance and advice when required
  11. operate the plant to compact in accordance with given working instructions to meet the required specification

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant regulations, legislation, company policies and procedures, safe working practices and operating information
  2. how to select, check and wear the appropriate PPE for the task
  3. how to report problems with the plant, equipment and operating information
  4. who to notify when conducting plant operations
  5. how to protect the work and surrounding area when operating plant to compact
  6. why it is important to take responsibility for your own behaviour and standards of work
  7. why you must conduct a pre-operational check of the work and surrounding area
  8. how to identify obstructions and changes in stability, safety and security of the work and surrounding area
  9. what constitutes unsafe conditions
  10. the limits of your own responsibility and competence and when to seek assistance or advice from others
  11. how to dispose of waste in line with safe working practices
  12. different methods of compaction and when they are used
  13. how to carry out the work activity to meet the required specification
  14. the importance of adhering to schedules and agreed timeframes
  15. the importance of monitoring the condition of plant and equipment
