Prepare the concrete mixer for loading
Overview
What is this standard about?
This standard is about preparing the concrete mixer for loading of a product. It covers the physical checks that a driver has to make on the concrete mixer and the documentation they are required to complete to comply with legal and organisational requirements.
Who is this standard for?
This standard is relevant to drivers of concrete mixers and those who are responsible for concrete mixers within logistics organisations.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- comply with the organisational procedures and all relevant legal, environmental, health and safety and operating requirements relating to concrete mixer operations
- prepare the concrete mixer for driving by completing the legal requirement for daily walk round checks to maintain the safety of the vehicle in accordance with manufacturers guidelines including:
- all mixer mounting frame bolts for damage or looseness
- mounting clips and angles for wear or cracks
- frame rails for rust, cracks, or signs of stress
- drum attachment bolts and drum bearing condition
- chute rack straps/cables and chute connection points for fatigue or cracks
- mixer control operation from cab and rear pendant
- manoeuvre the concrete mixer under the concrete batching plant to receive the product
- isolate the vehicle so no unintentional movement can occur
- secure the vehicle prior to loading of the product
- rotate the drum at the required speed for the loading process
- ensure people keep a safe distance from the mixer whilst loading of the product
- monitor the loading process
- transition the drum from loading rotation to agitation in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
- maintain the required drum agitation revolution speed in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
- check areas where material can gather and wash off any residual material prior to leaving the batching plant
- manoeuvre the vehicle from the batching plant
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the organisational procedures and all relevant legal, environmental, health and safety, and operating requirements relating to driving the vehicle on public road
- the capacity, specification and capabilities of the concrete mixer
- the hazards associated with handling ready mixed concrete
- the risk assessments and safe operating procedures for the task
- how the product can be affected by time, weather and temperature
- how to operate vehicle systems, drum rotation, controls and instruments.
- where to find information on the operation of the concrete mixer systems, controls and instruments
- the methods and process of communicating with the concrete batch plant operator
- the type and methods of concrete batching plants
- how to position the mixer under a batching plant
- how to use a wheel chock to isolate the vehicles when loading bay has a steep gradient
- how to find information on the concrete mix to be carried
- how to inspect the loaded product
- how to assess the consistency of the product
- the organisational procedures for reporting issues with the product loaded if the consistency of the product is out of specification
- how to control the drum rotation direction and speed in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
- the revolution direction and speed during loading in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
- the revolution direction and speed once loaded in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
- the process if the mixer is under or overloaded
- the importance of washing off any residue material prior to leaving the batching plant and moving onto a public highway
