Overview


This standard is about supporting participants on a shoot day. It relates to the work activities that you undertake when advising and coaching participants on live quarry shoot days.

This standard is for those who work in game shooting.

To meet this standard you will be able to:
describe the requirements of the shoot day to participants
provide information on shooting etiquette
provide information on quarry species and their expected behaviour
provide information on gun usage and safety
maintain customer relations
coach individuals on the development of their shooting abilities.

For you to fully understand the content of the standard, and the activities it describes, it is important that you are able to understand the terms used within the standard. See the Glossary for some definitions that should help you with this.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:


  1. carry out the activity safely in line with the relevant health and safety requirements
  2. gain an understanding of the participants’ level of experience
  3. confirm that participants understand the basic requirements of the shoot day
  4. support the participants to prepare for the planned shoot day activities
  5. provide information to participants, to support their understanding of the shooting activities
  6. communicate clearly and effectively with participants
  7. support participants in a polite and courteous manner
  8. observe the shooting ability of the participants
  9. provide feedback to participants on observed performance and shooting ability
  10. provide help and support to participants to support the development of their shooting technique


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


  1. the health and safety requirements associated with shooting and shoot days
  2. the relevant legal restrictions controlling the ownership and use of firearms 
  3. the legal requirements controlling storage, transport and carriage of firearms and ammunition
  4. the current nation specific legislation and codes of practice regarding the use of different types of ammunition
  5. the requirements of shooting activities
  6. the shoot day preparations, including how to complete pre-use checks on firearms and ammunition
  7. the safety information required to support shoot days
  8. the importance of effective communication to ensure safety on shoot days
  9. shooting etiquette and protocols
  10. the different shooting activities and how they are implemented
  11. how to recognise the quarry species and their shooting requirements
  12. the likely (expected) behaviour of quarry species on shoot days
  13. the shooting technique suitable for the quarry range, pick-up and interception, and for the firearms and ammunition available
  14. how to fit firearms and how participant’s personal physical characteristics impact on firearm fitting and usage
  15. the effective ranges of firearms and ammunition, including the absolute range
  16. the field conditions and their impact on shooting activities
  17. gun handling including how to load and hand over firearms to participants on the shooting field
  18. the communication skills required, including how to provide positive feedback on performance
  19. the importance of politeness in maintaining customer service
  20. the actions to take in the event of the shoot being disrupted by saboteurs

Game-shooting activities – any legal field sport involving the hunting   of game with a firearm

Wildlife management area – any area of land used for the provision of game-shooting activities

Participants – individuals participating in the shooting activity

Game – any legal quarry species in the nation in which the shoot takes place. The legal restrictions for shooting “small game” differs in each of the four UK nations and should be checked with the relevant national authority.
