Overview
This standard is about assisting with the catching of game birds for breeding. It is for those who work in game conservation and can be applied to any wildlife management area or game farm.
To meet this standard you will be able to:
• set catchers and catch game birds
• handle game birds and establish them in breeding areas
• care for game birds in a breeding area.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- carry out the activity safely, in line with the relevant health and safety requirements
- assist with the preparation and establishment of catchers suitable for the catching of game birds for breeding
- monitor and maintain the catchers on a regular basis
- identify and remove game birds from catchers in a manner that minimises stress to the birds
- handle and transport game birds in a manner that minimises stress to the birds and meets all the relevant legal requirements and codes of practice
- remove and release non-target species in a manner that minimises stress to them
- observe and report on the physical condition and health of caught-up game birds
- observe, record and report on the performance of the catching operation
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the health and safety requirements associated with the handling of game bird stock and other wildlife species
- how to identify and sex breeding stock
- the legal restrictions and codes of practice controlling the catching and transport of game birds
- how to prepare and maintain catchers according to the relevant legal requirements and codes of practice
- how to position the catchers to obtain the best results
- how to identify both target and non-target species
- how to handle and transport game birds in a manner that minimises stress to the birds
- the normal behaviour of game birds and the signs that indicate stress and disorder
- the advantages and disadvantages of closed flock and caught-up systems
- the relevant legislation, codes of practice and organisational requirements for the completion of records
