"This standard covers how to prepare electric welding equipment for use. You will need to check that the equipment and connections are safe, inspected and tested and the take action where equipment is not functioning correctly. You must check that equipment is stored in a clean, dry and safe environment.
It is important that you know and understand your responsibilities under the relevant legislation, codes of practice and policies of the business.
This standard is for those who use electric welding equipment."
Performance criteria
You must be able to:

- carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and policies of the business
- select and wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- maintain the safety and security of tools and equipment on site in accordance with the relevant legislation and business policy
- select and prepare the tools and equipment required for electric welding in accordance with the relevant legislation, manufacturer's guidelines and business policy
- confirm that the equipment and the connections are inspected, tested and ready for use in accordance with the relevant legislation, manufacturer's guidelines and business policy
- act in line with the relevant legislation, the manufacturer's guidelines and business policy when equipment is not functioning as required
- prepare the work area for the welding activities in accordance with the relevant legislation, the manufacturer's guidelines and business policy
- clean and store the welding equipment and materials in accordance with the relevant legislation, the manufacturer's guidelines and business policy
- maintain communication with all those involved in, or affected by your work
- confirm that records are completed, maintained and stored as required by the relevant legislation and business practice"

You need to know and understand:

- how to identify the different types of filter glass and when to use them
- the importance of ventilation whilst welding
