Overview
This standard is about consulting and working with the local community. The emphasis is on building a relationship with local people – farmers, landowners, local parish councils, local schools, local community groups and so on – through consultation and co-operation.
Involving the community and local residents in determining future activities can help to support a successful outcome.
This standard is relevant to all those who need to work closely with the local community.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify opportunities for consultation and collaboration with the local community, in accordance with the policy of your organisation
- establish and maintain contacts with the relevant sections of the local community
- keep the local community informed of the work of the organisation
- work with the local community to promote an understanding and awareness of environmental, social and economic objectives
- seek reactions and opinions where the work of the organisation is likely to affect individuals and groups from the local community
- gather and evaluate all the relevant information where conflicts of interest arise and seek specialist advice where necessary
- develop recommendations for action and obtain the agreement of your organisation
- keep the relevant people within the organisation informed of the outcomes of consultations and work with the local community

You need to know and understand:
- the opportunities available for consultation and collaboration with the local community
- the ways in which contact with the local community can be maintained
- the reasons for, and importance of, contact and consultation with the local community
- the likely impact of the work of the organisation on the local community
- the importance of promoting understanding and awareness as part of the consultation and collaborative working
- the methods of facilitating effective community consultation
- the different levels of engagement with the local community
- the potential and actual conflicting interests: between different community groups, and/or between the organisation and community groups
- the methods of resolving conflicts of interest
- the limits of your responsibility in consulting and working with the local community
- the importance of keeping relevant people in your organisation informed of your work with the local community
