Overview

This standard covers the trimming of equine hooves as determined by the hoof care plan. Trimming refers to work on the hoof surface by cutting and rasping. You will need to know when to trim hooves and be able to trim a variety of equine hooves. In order to trim hooves, you will need to approach and handle the equine in a manner that is likely to eliminate distress and alarm and work in a position that is safe for the equine and anyone involved in the work including yourself. You will act on any hoof conditions that cause changes to the hoof care plan.
You need to be aware of your own limitations and confirm that you meet the relevant legal responsibilities for providing your duty of care under animal health and welfare legislation, codes of practice and policies of the business.
The responsible person can be anyone who has responsibility for the equine such as the owner, trainer, groom or hoof care practitioners. This standard is for UK Equine Hoof Care practitioners.
