Overview

This standard covers the cleaning and routine maintenance of work equipment.

Routine maintenance is the maintenance that manufacturers recommend is carried out as part of a general cleaning and maintenance schedule. It does not cover the maintenance that manufacturers and specialist contractors undertake.

This standard is suitable for anyone who cleans and maintains work equipment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. carry out cleaning and maintenance of work equipment in accordance with instructions and workplace procedures
  2. carry out all work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and the organisation’s policies
  3. assess the risks and use safe working practices and the correct personal protective equipment (PPE), materials and equipment in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines
  4. maintain the appropriate levels of hygiene and biosecurity in accordance with the organisation’s procedures
  5. check that equipment is safe before undertaking cleaning and maintenance e.g. isolated from power supply
  6. comply with the frequency of cleaning that is recommended by manufacturers and the organisation’s policies
  7. carry out sterilisation of work equipment where required
  8. carry out routine maintenance in accordance with manufacturers' instructions or organise for maintenance to be carried out by a service engineer
  9. report any work equipment faults immediately, following the required procedure
  10. report wear and tear as required
  11. test and confirm the correct operation of the work equipment following cleaning and maintenance
  12. arrange for portable appliances to be tested by an approved electrician as required
  13. store cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely and correctly after use
  14. deal with waste from the activity safely and correctly in accordance with the relevant legal and the organisation’s procedures
  15. keep accurate and up-to-date records as required by the relevant legislation and the organisation

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the importance of completing the activity in accordance with instructions and workplace procedures
  2. your responsibilities under the current environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and the organisation’s policies
  3. the materials, equipment and cleaning methods that should be used for cleaning the different types of equipment and the protective clothing that should be worn
  4. the importance of maintaining appropriate levels of hygiene and biosecurity and the procedures for this
  5. why cleaning materials should be correctly diluted and the possible effects of not doing this
  6. the potential risks when using and storing cleaning materials and equipment and the ways in which these risks can be minimised
  7. which work equipment should be sterilised, when, why, and the potential risks if this is not done correctly
  8. the importance of cleaning and sterilisation to maintaining hygiene and biosecurity
  9. how frequently different items of work equipment should be cleaned, for example, which should be cleaned every time they are used, which should be cleaned daily and which less frequently
  10. how frequently different items of work equipment should be maintained, for example, which should be maintained every time they are used, and which should be maintained less frequently
  11. when equipment should be maintained by a service engineer and the organisation’s procedure for this
  12. how to check that the equipment is working correctly and the required procedure for reporting faults
  13. the organisation’s policy on the testing of portable appliances
  14. how to handle, store and dispose of waste from the activity in accordance with legal and organisation requirements
  15. the records that need to be maintained
