Assist with planting and establishing crops or plants
Overview
This standard covers assisting with planting and carrying out the necessary steps to
establish the crops or plants immediately afterwards. The term ‘assist with' is used to
indicate that you will be working under supervision.
You will be working in accordance with instructions and specifications.
If you are working with machinery you need to be appropriately trained or certificated in
line with current legislation.
You must carry out your work in a way which will minimise any impact on the natural
environment and enhance its nature, conservation and recreational value.
This standard does not cover the use of pesticides.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 prepare and use tools, equipment, materials and any personal protective
equipment for the work safely and effectively
P2 carry out any necessary preparation of the planting medium according to
instructions
P3 transport the crops or plants as instructed
P4 keep the crops or plants in a suitable condition before planting
P5 position the crops or plants and carry out planting as instructed
P6 provide protection and any labelling to the crops or plants as instructed
P7 provide the necessary aftercare for the crops or plants as instructed
P8 carry out work in a manner which prevents damage to the surrounding area
P9 maintain tools and equipment safely and effectively
P10 store tools, equipment and material safely and effectively
P11 deal with waste safely and correctly in accordance with instructions
P12 carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and
safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and company
policies

how to identify them

K3 how and why to keep crops or plants in a suitable condition before planting

K5 how to prepare the planting medium for the work
K6 how planting is carried out and what the results should look like
K7 the types of crop or plant protection which are used and what labelling is required
K8 the types of problems which may occur and when and to whom to report them to
K9 how to maintain and store tools, equipment and material in a safe and effective
condition
K10 your responsibilities under current environmental and health and safety
legislation, codes of practice and company policies
K11 how to handle, transport and dispose of waste in accordance with legal and
organisational requirements

Instructions: verbal or written.
Specifications: drawings, schedules, method statements, Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs), manufacturers' guidelines, customer requirements.
Plants may be, for example, seeds, seedlings, transplants or advanced nursery stock.
Carry out planting by manual or mechanical means. In some industries you will need to
carry out preparation of the planting medium (e.g. soil). Planting could include -
position, spacing, depth, location.
Provide suitable protection, and if necessary, moisture to the plants you have planted.
Plant protection may include, for example: stakes, ties, grow tubes, tree shelters, spiral
guards, cloches, cold frames, mulching.
