Overview
This standard covers assisting with identifying and controlling common pests and
diseases.
You will be working in accordance with instructions and specifications.
You must carry out your work in a way which will minimise any impact on the natural
environment
Note: the use of chemical controls (e.g. pesticides) is not a requirement of this
standard.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and
safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and company
policies
P2 observe the crop in accordance with instructions
P3 report the presence and extent of common pests and diseases
P4 carry out control methods in accordance with instructions
P5 carry out work in a manner which prevents damage to the surrounding area
P6 immediately report to the appropriate person if problems arise during pest and
disease control
P7 deal with waste safely and correctly in accordance with instructions
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 your responsibilities under current environmental and health and safety
legislation, codes of practice and company policies
K2 instructions and procedures relating to the observation and control of pests and
diseases
K3 the effects of pests and diseases on the crop or plant
K4 the types of pests and diseases which may be present
K5 whom to report the presence and extent of pests and diseases
K6 carry out work in a manner which prevents damage to the surrounding area
K7 the types of problems which may occur and to whom these must be reported
K8 how to handle, transport and dispose of waste in accordance with legal and
organisational requirements
