Overview
This standard is about cleaning the animal related work environment. The cleaning of the workplace is a key factor in maintaining the health and safety of the animals and those involved in, or affected by cleaning the animal work environment. You must be able to recognise and deal with actual and potential hazards. The cleanliness and appearance of the workplace is also a key factor in the organisation's image to customers and potential customers.
This standard is suitable for anyone who undertakes routine cleaning of the workplace and the materials that are used in the course of normal work.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- carry out your work in accordance with workplace instructions and procedures
- carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, associated codes of practice and organisational policies
- maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with workplace instructions, organisational policy and relevant legislation
- select, wear and maintain suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- select and use the suitable cleaning equipment and materials, in accordance with the manufacturers' guidelines
- dilute cleaning materials correctly at the required temperature and use them according to the manufacturers' guidelines
- clean the animal related work environment to the required specifications and at a time agreed by those concerned that will cause the least disruption
- carry out sterilisation of the animal related work environment, where required
- maintain the health, welfare, safety and security of animals during the cleaning activity
- leave animal related work environment visibly clean and in the required state for the animal related work to be undertaken
- return cleaning equipment and materials in good working order to the relevant storage area after use
- handle, use and store potentially hazardous substances in accordance with the relevant legislation, manufacturers’ guidelines and organisational policy
- sort and deal with non-hazardous waste safely and correctly in accordance with the requirements of your organisation and the relevant legislation
- be aware when problems arise during cleaning and take the required action
- maintain the records required by the relevant legislation and organisational policy
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the importance of completing activities in accordance with workplace instructions and procedures
- your responsibilities under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, associated codes of practice and organisational policies
- the materials and equipment that should be used for cleaning the animal related work environment
- the clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be worn when cleaning the animal related work environment
- the risks involved when using and storing cleaning materials and equipment, and how these risks can be minimised
- the relevant cleaning materials to use for different animal species, particular fabrics, surfaces and equipment
- the required dilution of cleaning materials and the possible effects of not following manufacturers guidelines
- how to maintain the health, welfare, safety and security of the animals during the cleaning of animal related work environments and why this is important
- how to minimise disruption to other staff and to animals while carrying out the cleaning of animal related work environments
- the importance of cleaning and sterilisation animal related work environments to maintaining hygiene and bio-security
- how to sort and deal with different types of non-hazardous waste
- the special requirements for handling, using and storing potentially hazardous substances, in accordance with the relevant legislation, manufacturers’ guidelines and the requirements of your organisation

- the consequences of not reporting problems found during cleaning activities to the relevant person
