Overview
This standard is about cleaning and checking animal accommodation under supervision and instruction, to ensure it is in a suitable condition for the animals.
You will need to be aware of the importance of the relevant health, safety and animal welfare in connection with this work.
You will need to be aware of your own limitations and ensure that you meet the relevant legal responsibilities for maintaining the duty of care under current animal health and welfare legislation.
This standard is suitable for anyone who cleans and checks animal accommodation under supervision and instruction
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
"1. carry out all work under supervision and instruction
2. comply with the relevant animal health and welfare, other animal-related legislation and associated codes of practice at all times
3. maintain the health and safety of yourself and all those involved in the activity, and the welfare of the horse, during the work
4. maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with instructions, relevant legislation and organisational policy
5. use safe working practices and the correct clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning equipment and materials for the activity, in accordance with instructions
6. prepare and use the equipment and materials for the work in accordance with instructions and under supervision
7. check that the accommodation is ready for cleaning and that animals are secure or have been removed and housed securely elsewhere
8. report any concerns with the animals’ accommodation to the relevant person
9. clean the animals' accommodation and contents in accordance with instructions and under supervision
10. carry out the sterilisation of the animal accommodation, where required, in accordance with instructions and under supervision
11. change bedding and other materials in accordance with instructions and under supervision
12. deal with waste safely and correctly in accordance with instructions, relevant legislation and organisational policy
13. leave the animal’s accommodation in an appropriate condition after cleaning
14. return the cleaning equipment and materials to the correct storage area after use
15. keep the animals' accommodation safe and secure
16. maintain the records required by the relevant legislation and organisational policy"

5. why it is important to check the animal accommodation and report any concerns to a supervisor
6. the importance of cleaning and sterilisation to maintaining hygiene and bio-security
7. the materials and equipment that should be used for cleaning work and what clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn
8. the risks when using and storing cleaning materials and equipment, and how these risks can be minimised
9. how to prepare equipment and materials ready for cleaning in accordance with instructions and under supervision
10. how to prepare the accommodation for cleaning in accordance with instructions and under supervision
11. the correct procedures for cleaning the animal accommodation
12. the correct procedures for dealing with different types of waste produced by the activity
13. the condition in which accommodation must be left after cleaning
14. the materials that animals need in their accommodation to maintain their health and well-being
15. the importance of working in a safe and tidy manner when cleaning and checking animal accommodation
16. the records that need to be maintained and the importance of completing them in accordance with instructions, relevant legislation and organisational policy"
