Overview
This standard identifies the requirements when working with children and young people to identify transitions that may be occurring or are about to occur in their lives. Transitions arising from life events may be an experience that can affect them emotionally, behaviourally or developmentally. Such transitions may be known and planned for or unplanned, but critically they have a major impact on children and young people.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- establish consent and access information on transitions of children or young people
- identify and agree the role and responsibilities of yourself and others when supporting children or young people during transitions
- use communication strategies appropriate to the age and stage of development of children or young people
- explain to children or young people and others what information you may have to share
- work in partnership with children or young people and others to plan how to manage transitions in a child-centred way
- identify risks to wellbeing for children or young people that are brought about by transitions
- use observation and listening skills to assess emotions, behaviours and responses of children or young people
- provide opportunities for children or young people and others to explore how they feel about transitions
- support children or young people and others to ask questions
- pace interactions to promote participation and shared understanding
- explore with children or young people and others, strengths they can use during transitions
- present information to children or young people and others about available support in a child-centred way
- work in partnership with others to access available support
- work in partnership with children or young people and others to monitor and review the progress of transitions
- complete records and reports required to work with children or young people through transitions
- reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities when working with children or young people through transitions
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the types of transition that children and young people may experience
- the effects transitions can have on children and young people and others
- the signs and indications that children and young people are going through transitions
- the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on transitions
- the influence of culture and background on transitions
- different techniques to enable children and young people to explore concerns and express thoughts and feelings
- the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion when working with children and young people through transitions
- how to support emotional regulation during transitions
- how to apply trauma informed principles to support children and young people through transitions
- the importance of a proactive and co-ordinated transition plan
- the role of relationships and support networks in transitions
- how to respond to issues or concerns that could impact on children and young people
- how to use digital tools and devices to support children and young people through transitions
- the records and reports required for working with children and young people through transitions
- theories relevant to working with children and young people through transitions
- the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for working with children and young people through transitions
- the workplace requirements on equality, diversity, inclusion, and rights when working with children and young people through transitions
- how to work with in partnership with others to support children and young people through transitions
- how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when working with children and young people through transitions, and how to address this
- the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in working with children and young people through transitions
