Overview

This standard identifies the requirements when promoting the educational potential of children and young people. This includes supporting children and young people to identify their educational aspirations then helping them to plan and access educational opportunities and activities. It also includes encouraging and supporting children and young people when they carry out educational activities and reviewing how effective the activities have been.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the communication, language and developmental needs of children or young people 
  2. promote diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and participation 
  3. listen and respond in a way that shows you value and respect children or young people 
  4. work in partnership with children or young people to identify their strengths, educational potential and outcomes they want to achieve in their life 
  5. identify with children or young people how they can build on their strengths and educational potential to achieve their outcomes
  6. support children or young people to explore their motivation and set realistic and achievable goals and measurable outcomes
  7. support children or young people to identify and express their concerns, fears and potential risks 
  8. work in partnership with children or young people and others to plan and manage their concerns, fears and potential risks 
  9. work in partnership with the child or young person and others to plan, access and coordinate available resources and support to achieve their educational goals and outcomes 
  10. work in partnership with children or young people and others on creative solutions for resources and support  
  11. empower children or young people and others to plan any additional support needed to achieve their educational goals and outcomes  
  12. involve children or young people on how educational goals and outcomes will be monitored and reviewed  
  13. acknowledge the educational achievements and successes of children or young people
  14. encourage others to acknowledge children or young people educational achievements and successes 
  15. monitor the implementation of the planned resources and support
  16. use strategies to develop the self-regulation skills of children or young people when managing challenges 
  17. review in partnership with children or young people and others educational achievements, goals and outcomes, and identify any changes required  
  18. inform others of progress and changes to the educational resources, support, goals and outcomes of children or young people
  19. complete records and reports required on educational goals and outcomes of children or young people 
  20. reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities to promote the educational potential of children and young people

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to access records and information on communication, language and developmental needs of children and young people 
  2. how and where to access resources and additional support for children and young people
  3. the additional considerations for care experienced children and young people in achieving their educational outcomes
  4. how to apply trauma informed principles in educational support 
  5. principles of risk assessment, risk management and positive risk taking
  6. how to work in partnership with children and young people and others to identify what is important to them in their lives and why 
  7. the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion in educational support
  8. how to support emotional regulation during educational support 
  9. how to recognise behaviour as a form of communication
  10. the importance of meeting the educational needs of children and young people and the connection between education and outcomes they want to achieve in their life 
  11. how to work in partnership with children and young people and others to identify, measure and evaluate their outcomes
  12. how to use digital tools and devices to support children and young people to achieve their educational potential 
  13. factors that support children and young people to thrive and reach their full potential
  14. how to support neurodivergence and additional needs of children and young people in educational support 
  15. how stereotypes and stigma can limit children and young people’s educational development  
  16. environmental, physical, social, and emotional factors that may enhance or limit educational development and achievement
  17. the influence of culture and background on educational support of children and young people
  18. how children and young people learn and achieve through education and how this relates to other aspects of their development 
  19. the resources, information and advice available to support the educational development and achievements of children and young people
  20. the types of naturally occurring opportunities that support children and young people in their educational development and achievement
  21. the local educational provision and options available to support the educational needs of children and young people
  22. methods of encouraging and motivating children and young people to achieve their educational potential
  23. theories relevant to the educational potential of children and young people
  24. the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for promoting the educational potential of children and young people
  25. the workplace requirements on equality, dignity, inclusion and rights when promoting the educational potential of children and young people
  26. how to work in partnership with others to promote the educational potential of children and young people
  27. how to respond to issues and concerns that may occur during the education of children and young people
  28. how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when promoting the educational potential of children and young people, and how to address this    
  29. the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in promoting the educational potential of children and young people
