Overview

This standard identifies the requirements when you engage with families in ways that encourage them to be involved with children and young people’s learning and development. It requires you to work with families in ways that will support their understanding of the learning and development of children and young people. It includes encouraging families to be involved in play and activities and the review process.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. communicate with families using an open and welcoming inclusive approach  
  2. listen carefully to families and acknowledge their feelings and experiences 
  3. listen to children or young people to ensure their views are heard, taking account of their age, needs and abilities 
  4. recognise and respect different family structures and how they may affect expectations for children or young people 
  5. encourage families to recognise the unique qualities, skills and capabilities of children or young people 
  6. support families to access information about the learning and development of children or young people
  7. work with others to promote supportive environments where families can talk about the learning and development of children or young people 
  8. demonstrate how play activities and responsive interactions can help children or young people learn, grow and develop new skills 
  9. work in partnership with families to support them to participate in the play, learning and development of children or young people
  10. identify challenges that might prevent families from being involved in the learning and development of children or young people
  11. work in partnership with families to support them to recognise the significant contributions they make to the learning and development of children or young people
  12. involve children or young people in reviewing their own progress
  13. involve families in the progress review of children or young people
  14. provide feedback to children or young people and families about their progress 
  15. work in partnership with children or young people, families and others to use review information to plan the next steps for learning and development
  16. complete records and reports required for engaging families with children or young people’s learning and development  
  17. reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities to engage families with children and young people’s learning and development

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the transitions that children and young people may go through and how these can impact their wellbeing and development 
  2. the social, physical and economic factors that impact the development of children and young people
  3. the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on the wellbeing and development of children and young people
  4. how to recognise and value diverse family structures
  5. how family expectations for children and young people might vary according to culture and background 
  6. the importance of dignity, kindness, and compassion in engaging with children and young people and families 
  7. how to support emotional regulation of families engaging with children and young people’s learning and development
  8. how to support families to access information on child development
  9. the link between play, learning, and development, and how to encourage families to be actively involved in play 
  10. how to positively reinforce and celebrate the efforts and involvement of families
  11. how to support families to recognise and appreciate the unique qualities, skills, and capabilities of children and young people
  12. the impact of family involvement in reviewing the progress of children and young people and how to facilitate this process 
  13. the value of supportive environments where families feel comfortable discussing the learning and development of children and young people
  14. how to listen and respond to children and young people effectively, considering their age, communication requirements, and needs, and why this is important 
  15. how to apply trauma informed principles when engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development
  16. the possible challenges to family involvement in the learning and development of children and young people
  17. how to use digital tools and devices to engage families with children and young people’s learning and development
  18. the records and reports required for engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development
  19. theories relevant to engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development
  20. the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development
  21. the workplace requirements for equality, diversity, inclusion, and rights when engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development 
  22. how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development, and how to address this
  23. the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in engaging families with children and young people’s learning and development
