Overview

This standard identifies the requirements when promoting the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs, in partnership with their families. This includes encouraging children and young people with additional needs to take part in a full range of play and experiences. It also includes the identification and provision of resources that will support children and young people to participate and be included. It requires you to support families in the care, learning and development of children and young people.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. observe children or young people and use observations to inform their care, learning, and development 
  2. establish consent, access and share relevant information on the additional needs of children and young people 
  3. encourage the independence of children and young people in their care, learning, and development 
  4. develop personalised plans to support children or young people with additional needs 
  5. work in partnership with families and others to identify and request resources to meet the preferences and needs of children and young people 
  6. identify and use aids, equipment, digital tools or devices with families and others to support children and young people with additional needs
  7. identify and work with others to assess and respond to the needs of children and young people 
  8. use communication styles and methods that meets the preferences and needs of children or young people and families 
  9. listen and respond in ways that shows you value and respect children or young people and families 
  10. support children or young people to express their thoughts and to emotionally regulate to achieve shared understanding 
  11. offer children or young people and families a range of spaces, experiences and interactions 
  12. arrange environments to support the participation of children or young people and families
  13. ensure families and others understand and feel confident in their roles and responsibilities 
  14. establish and develop relationships and safe environments to support families to share relevant information and concerns
  15. support families to recognise and value their contributions to the care, learning and development of children or young people with additional needs
  16. work with families and others to feedback on the partnership working, identify good practice and address any changes required 
  17. complete records and reports for the care, learning and development of children or young people
  18. reflect on how you carried out your own roles and responsibilities when promoting the care, learning and development of children or young people with additional needs in partnership with families

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on the care, learning and development of children and young people
  2. the transitions children and young people may experience and the impact of change on their learning and development 
  3. the emotional, social and environmental pressures families of children and young people with additional needs may experience and require support with
  4. the appropriate use of language to support understanding of the needs of children and young people
  5. the assessment and intervention frameworks for children and young people with additional needs  
  6. the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion in supporting children and young people with additional needs
  7. your role in supporting the engagement of children and young people and families 
  8. the rights of children and young people to have to equal access to care and support 
  9. local and national support available for children and young people with additional needs, families and others
  10. advocacy services that support the rights of children and young people and families 
  11. the expertise of families regarding the needs of children and young people
  12. the influence of culture, background and spirituality on the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs
  13. integration and inclusion practices in your workplace and local area
  14. how to apply trauma informed principles to promote the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs
  15. typical developmental patterns and individual variations in children and young people
  16. how to recognise behaviour as a form of communication
  17. how to support emotional regulation during partnership working with families
  18. the importance of partnership working with families to personalise approaches to meet the needs of children and young people
  19. types and use of aids, equipment, digital tools or devices to support the care, learning and development of children and young people
  20. augmentative and alternative communication strategies to support children and young people
  21. the records and reports required for promoting the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs in partnership with families
  22. theories relevant to promoting the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs in partnership with families
  23. the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for promoting the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs in partnership with families
