Overview
This standard identifies the requirements when you provide assessment on the performance of others. This includes preparing to assess performance, carrying out the assessment in safe and ethical ways and giving feedback on the outcome of your assessment decisions.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify and share the standards that will be used to assess the performance of others
- work in partnership with others to discuss abilities, experiences, expectations, and any concerns about assessments
- plan work activities, assessment methods, and evidence types to meet the assessment standards
- agree when, where and how observations of practice will be carried out and who will be involved
- identify and plan how to address consent and any ethical issues
- follow agreed plans to observe performance and assess other evidence
- confirm the assessment process is not adversely impacting the care or support of individuals
- evaluate whether practice and other evidence meet the assessment standards
- ensure the authenticity of evidence
- work in partnership to discuss assessment decisions
- confirm understanding of assessment decisions and encourage questions
- provide feedback on strengths and how practice can be improved
- work in partnership to review assessment plans to identify gaps in practice or knowledge
- agree on any training, development or evidence needed before completing assessments
- complete records and reports required for providing assessment on the performance of others
- reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities when providing assessment on the performance of others
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to plan work activities, assessment methods, and evidence types to meet the standards and preferences and needs of those being assessed
- the range and purpose of valid assessment methods and types of evidence for assessing performance
- how to identify and agree performance criteria, which aspects of performance they demonstrate and who will be involved
- who else should be involved when assessing competence of others
- how to establish consent and consider the range of ethical considerations when assessing performance of others
- the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on the assessment of performance of others
- the influence of culture, background and spirituality on the assessment of performance of others
- the importance of agreeing where and when feedback will be given and further assessments carried out
- how to observe regular work activities without adversely impacting the care or support of individuals or the workplace
- the effects of observing practice on individuals and others
- how to make accurate and fair comparisons between performance and agreed standards
- how to provide assessment opportunities which are fair, consistent and do not discriminate
- how to prepare and ask questions to confirm knowledge and understanding
- how to check the authenticity of evidence provided
- how to give constructive feedback on assessment decisions
- how to encourage questions and where to seek advice
- how to support emotional regulation during assessment of performance
- how to apply trauma informed principles when assessing performance of others
- the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion when assessing performance of others
- methods for reviewing assessment plans, identifying areas for improvement, and planning additional assessments
- how to identify required action to meet agreed levels of performance
- who to pass assessment information on to, and when
- how to work in partnership with others to provide assessment on the performance of others
- how digital tools and devices can be used to support the assessment of others
- the records and reports required for providing assessment on the performance of others
- theories relevant to providing assessment on the performance of others
- the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for providing assessment on the performance of others
