Overview
This standard identifies the requirements when promoting the independence of individuals to use medication and self-administer. The standard covers preparing for and supporting the administration of medication, as well as implementing safe practices to ensure medication supplies are received, stored and disposed of safely.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others to promote the independence of individuals to administer medication
- establish consent and access information on individuals and their medication
- review or complete medication risk assessments to support the independence of individuals to self-administer
- support individuals and others to access supplies of prescribed medication
- support individuals and others to store medication in line with risk assessments and medication storage requirements
- support individuals and others to check medication is in date and to dispose of unused or out of date medication
- work in partnership with individuals to identify how, where, and when to self-administer medication in line with risk assessments and prescription requirements
- work in partnership with individuals to confirm the resources and support they require to self-administer medication in line with risk assessments and care or support plans
- follow infection prevention and control methods for the use of medication, and support individuals to do so
- encourage and support individuals to self-administer in line with risk assessments and care or support plans
- observe that medications are administered correctly in line with prescription requirements
- complete records and reports required for promoting independence with medication
- reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities to promoting independence with medication

- how to apply trauma informed principles when supporting individuals to self-administer medication

- the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion when supporting individuals to self-administer medication
- how to support emotional regulation during self-administration of medication
- common types of medications and their general uses
- the safe storage and disposal of medication
- different administration routes and forms of medication
- resources that can assist in administering medication
- how to use digital tools and devices to promote independence with medication
- the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on the use of medication
- hygiene precautions and the potential consequences of not following these when using medication
- how to recognise and respond to health reactions or emergencies with medication
- the records and reports required for promoting independence with medication
- theories relevant to promoting independence with medication
- the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for promoting independence with medication
- the workplace requirements on equality, diversity, inclusion, and rights when promoting independence with medication
- how to work with in partnership with others to promote independence with medication
- how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when promoting independence with medication, and how to address this
- the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in promoting independence with medication
