Overview
This standard identifies the requirements when supporting the care, learning and development of children and young people with additional needs. You will be able to support children and young people with additional needs by providing care and encouragement, enable them to participate in activities and experiences and support children and young people and others, according to the procedures of the setting
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- establish consent and access information on the needs of children or young people
- observe children or young people to establish their individual needs and any challenges to participation
- follow the individual plan for children or young people as a basis for their support
- encourage and celebrate the efforts and achievements of children or young people
- provide support and care suitable for the preferences, needs and abilities of children or young people
- identify and use communication styles and methods appropriate to the preferences and needs of children or young people
- identify and use aids, equipment, digital tools or devices to support children or young people with additional needs
- adapt environments to maximise participation of children or young people with additional needs
- offer a range of spaces, experiences and interactions for children or young people with additional needs
- use opportunities for children or young people to take turns or share space
- support children or young people with additional needs to work through challenges
- work with others to support children or young people with additional needs
- contribute to feedback on the progress of children or young people with additional needs
- contribute to records and reports required for supporting children or young people with additional needs
- reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities when supporting children or young people with additional needs, with feedback from others
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to access information on the preferences and needs of children and young people
- the stages of child development
- the influence of culture and background on children and young people with additional needs
- how to apply trauma informed principles to support children and young people with additional needs
- how to adapt spaces and experiences to enable children and young people with additional needs to participate
- how play can support children and young people with additional needs
- how integration and inclusion are implemented in the workplace
- the role of relationships and support networks in supporting children and young people with additional needs
- the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion in supporting children and young people with additional needs
- the specific additional needs of children and young people and the influence on their development
- the influence of neurodivergence on wellbeing and resilience of children and young people
- how to adapt communication to support children and young people with additional needs
- the different aids, equipment and digital tools and devices children and young people with additional needs may use
- how to recognise behaviour as a form of communication
- strategies to support children and young people with additional needs during times of stress or distress
- how to support emotional regulation of children and young people with additional needs
- the transitions and changes that may impact children and young people with additional needs
- how to work in partnership with others to support children and young people with additional needs
- the records and reports required to support children and young people with additional needs
- the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for supporting children and young people with additional needs
- workplace requirements on equality, diversity, inclusion and rights when supporting children and young people with additional needs
- how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when supporting children and young people with additional needs, and how to address this
- the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in supporting children and young people with additional needs
