Overview

This standard identifies the requirements when you support effective group care, making this a positive experience where individuals feel valued and safe. The standard includes contributing to group care that supports the physical, social and emotional needs of the group and its members, contributing to the implementation of group care programmes and activities, and contributing to the assessment of group care.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify and agree the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others in contributing to the implementation and assessment of effective group care 
  2. identify with others how group processes can develop interpersonal skills and individual growth
  3. work in partnership with individuals to identify their preferences and needs for group programmes
  4. promote and support the independence of individuals to participate in group programmes and activities
  5. support individuals and groups to develop a supportive culture 
  6. encourage individuals to recognise and appreciate the value of working together
  7. assist individuals in using opportunities and techniques for emotional regulation when working together
  8. ensure the safety of individuals and support them to feel part of groups
  9. support individuals and groups to identify and resolve challenges 
  10. address any negative impacts on individuals within the group
  11. support individuals and others to feedback on care processes, effects, and outcomes of groups
  12. work in partnership with individuals and others to identify and address changes to group care practice
  13. contribute to records and reports required for supporting effective group care 
  14. reflect on how you carried out your roles and responsibilities when supporting effective group care

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the principles that underpin group care activities
  2. how to support the development of group care activities that are inclusive and support individuals
  3. how to apply trauma informed principles to support effective group care  
  4. the influence of neurodivergence and additional needs on supporting effective group care
  5. the influence of culture, background and spirituality on participation in group care
  6. how to encourage individuals to participate in group activities
  7. the importance of dignity, kindness and compassion in supporting effective group care
  8. types of group care activities that are appropriate to groups with whom you work
  9. types of digital tools and devices that can support effective group care
  10. factors to consider when evaluating group care practice
  11. conflicts which can arise between choices of individuals within groups and how to deal with these situations  
  12. techniques to support emotional regulation in a group care setting
  13. the impact that both positive and negative group care experiences have on individuals, group behaviour and cohesiveness
  14. how to work in partnership with others to support effective group care
  15. the records and reports required for supporting effective group care
  16. the relevant legal requirements, standards of practice, frameworks and guidance for supporting effective group care
  17. the workplace requirements on equality, diversity, inclusion, and rights when supporting effective group care
  18. how your personal experiences and unconscious bias may impact when supporting effective group care, and how to address this
  19. the role of supervision, reflective practice and learning and development in supporting effective group care
