Install curtain walling

This standard covers the positioning, securing and preparation of curtain walling. The complexity could be because the products have unique requirements relating to their production, have features that are difficult to achieve, or require a mixture of materials and processes that are particularly unusual. Curtain walling systems will either provide the external surfaces of a building or be positioned within a large aperture. You will need to position system components correctly, secure them to the main structure of a building and prepare them to support the panels.

This standard is for you if you work in the Fenestration and Glazing Industry and are involved in on-site installation work of Curtain Wall systems.

1. comply with health and safety requirements and procedures at all times
2. obtain reliable sources of information and assess the implication of complex requirements on installation processes
3. report any issues with requirements for curtain walling that you feel may affect safety, quality or timescales to relevant people
4. check installation location(s) and all relevant surfaces are prepared to meet specifications
5. use specified installation materials and fixings in line with safe working practices and regulatory requirements
6. position installation materials to meet specifications
7. identify, select and use appropriate tools and equipment for installing curtain walling following safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
8. fix installation materials to structures so that they are secure and apply specified materials following manufacturer's instructions to provide a weatherproof installation
9. check installation materials are undamaged and are capable of supporting panels following standard operating procedures (SOPs)
10. finish work checking that the installation work is plumb, level and square
11. check the curtain walling screen(s) function as required and meet the specifications
12. remove tools and equipment from work areas and store them following SOPs
13. remove surplus materials and debris from work area and dispose of them following, site rules, SOPs and current legislation
14. restock any materials used from appropriate sources that are necessary for further work
15. identify any problems relating to installation work and deal with them following SOPs
16. record information on work in appropriate information systems
17. pass relevant information to customers about operation and cleaning of curtain walling following SOPs

15. how to deal with surplus materials including disposal, recycling and reuse in line with SOPs and current legislation
16. types of materials to be restocked and how to obtain these
17. how to undertake final inspection of installation work, including whether drainage is clear and functioning
18. types of problem that can occur with installation work and SOPs for dealing with them
19. information systems that should be used and why it is important to use them
20. information and instructions to provide to customers relating to operation and cleaning
