Overview

This standard is about replacing electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic plant and apparatus in the power utilities environment. This includes preparing and undertaking the work in in accordance with your organisation’s policies and procedures.
You will demonstrate a safety conscious approach to the control of hazards associated with the activity whilst working and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve tasks.

This standard is suitable for a crafts person or technician working in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of wind turbine components in the power utilities environment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with your organisation’s requirements throughout the duration of the work
  2. use available information to identify the plant and apparatus to be worked on in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  3. plan the work to be undertaken taking into account the location, resources, isolation points and sequence of tasks
  4. carry out a site-specific risk assessment of the work, identifying hazards and the required control measures and safe systems of work
  5. inform all affected parties of the intended work plan and their responsibilities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  6. read and interpret your organisation’s work instructions and supporting documentation
  7. carry out a pre-use inspection of the tools and equipment to be used, checking condition and service information in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  8. select, inspect and wear relevant personal protective equipment for completing work activities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  9. apply and adhere to control measures in accordance with the requirements of the Safe System of Work (SSOW) for the work activity
  10. make sure that the specification of the replacement plant and apparatus meets operational requirements and is fit for purpose
  11. troubleshoot common issues that may arise during plant and apparatus replacement, implementing appropriate solutions.
  12. replace plant and apparatus in the utilities environment taking precautions to avoid damage in accordance with work instructions
  13. set and adjust plant and apparatus confirming that the finished work meets operational and performance requirements in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  14. carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental, health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, SSOW and organisational procedures
  15. store tools and equipment safely and securely, leaving the work area in a safe condition
  16. report unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources
  17. demonstrate efficient use of resources to minimise downtime during plant and apparatus replacement.
  18. record and report results of the operation in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
  19. use your organisation’s reporting procedures to report problems outside your responsibility to designated personnel.

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. your responsibilities under current environmental, health and safety legislation and your organisation’s requirements in relation to the work to be carried out
  2. your organisation’s reporting lines and authorisation roles and responsibilities in relation to operations
  3. your organisation’s safety rules, policies and procedures in relation to replacing plant and apparatus
  4. the environmental impact considerations during plant and apparatus replacement, including waste management, pollution prevention, and adherence to environmental regulations.
  5. your organisation’s procedures and processes for reporting problems with tools and equipment
  6. how to select suitable tools and equipment that are in date and calibrated
  7. your organisation’s processes and procedures you must follow when inspecting and preparing tools and equipment prior to use
  8. what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health
  9. the hazards associated with working on plant and apparatus and how to deal with them
  10. how to select, inspect and use personal protective equipment
  11. how to carry out a site risk assessment, identify hazards and assess risks of the site and proposed activity
  12. the procedures for maintaining and using tools and equipment for replacing plant and apparatus safely and effectively
  13. the dangers of electricity and how electric shock can be received including: direct contact, induced voltage, and arcing
  14. how to ensure that plant and apparatus has been made safe, including safe isolation procedures, prove dead, and de-energising of hydraulic systems
  15. how to carry out safe lifting operations compliant with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), including environmental factors
  16. your organisation’s requirements for updating reporting and recording information
  17. your organisation’s procedures for responding to the different types and categories of emergency situations that can occur
  18. the specific principles, methods, processes and procedures for replacing plant and apparatus
  19. how to recognise and report inaccurate and incorrect work instructions and documentation
