Overview
This standard is about maintaining electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic plant and apparatus in an electricity power utility environment. It includes the processes and procedures to be followed to make sure that the completed maintenance work meets the quality assurance and operating specifications set by your organisation.
This standard is suitable for a crafts person or technician working in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of wind turbine components in the power utilities environment.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow and maintain safe working and environment practices in accordance with your organisation’s requirements throughout the duration of the work
- use your organisation’s documentation and work instructions to determine the work location
- conduct a site-specific risk assessment in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- develop a work plan that includes tasks and sequencing of tasks needed to complete the work activity
- provide the work plan to parties directly and indirectly responsible for completing the work activity
- carry out pre use checks on tools and equipment to be used to complete the maintenance work in accordance with work instructions and equipment specifications
- select and wear required personal protective equipment to complete work activities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- apply and adhere to control measures in accordance with the requirements of the Safe System of Work (SSOW)
- locate the plant and equipment and establish what is to be dismantled in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- undertake checks and routine activities as part of a planned maintenance programme
- determine the defects and measure variations in the performance of equipment against its specification and performance criteria
- maintain plant and apparatus in accordance with equipment specification and maintenance procedures
- configure the finished product for compliance with work instructions and operating specifications
- store tools and equipment on completion of the work activity in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- dispose of waste materials and hazardous substances in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- leave the work area in a condition which is in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- report unavailable or defective tools, equipment and resources in accordance with your organisation’s reporting procedures
- maintain documentation and report the completion of work activities in accordance with your organisation’s requirements
- deal with any problems within the limits of your job role responsibility
- report any problems outside your job role responsibility to designated personnel
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- your responsibilities under current environmental, health and safety legislation and your organisation’s procedures in relation to the work to be carried out
- your organisation’s reporting lines and authorisation roles and responsibilities
- your organisation’s policies and procedures that directly impact on the work to be undertaken
- your organisation’s procedures and processes for reporting problems with tools and equipment
- the procedures and information sources used to make sure that tools and equipment are fit for purpose and safe to use
- what processes and procedures need to be followed and complied with when carrying out a pre-use inspection of tools and equipment, including condition and service information
- what personal protective equipment needs to be worn when undertaking work activities
- what materials and substances are dangerous and hazardous to health
- how to maintain safe working and environmental practices throughout the duration of the work
- how to minimise risks to self and others when undertaking work activities
- your organisation’s work instructions, information and reporting systems and documentation
- your organisation’s procedures for responding to the different types and categories of emergency situations that might occur
- the specific principles, methods, processes and procedures for maintaining plant and apparatus
- what handling techniques and equipment should be used, in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), when removing plant and apparatus
- the procedures for identifying and reporting inaccurate and incorrect work instructions and documentation
- the safety techniques specific to electricity power utilities, including safe isolation procedures, prove dead, de-energising of hydraulic systems and confined space entry protocols, as required by your organisation
