Overview
This Standard is about assembling pipes and fittings for water network activities. This can include a range of assembly methods and techniques used for metallic, polyethylene (PE) materials, barrier pipes or fittings. This can apply to pipes of any diameter.
This involves producing assemblies and securing them to industry standards and specifications in line with work instructions.
This Standard is for water network operatives who assemble pipes and fittings
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work in line with relevant health, safety, environment, water quality and other relevant regulations and guidelines at all times
- assemble pipes and fittings in line with work instructions, assembly drawings and any other relevant specifications
- make sure specified pipes and fittings are available and in a usable condition
- use appropriate methods and techniques to assemble pipes and fittings in their designated positions
- secure pipes and fittings using specified connectors and securing devices
- check that finished assembly meets specification
- deal with problems within your control without delay and in line with organisational procedures
- report problems you cannot solve to relevant people
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- relevant health, safety, environment and other relevant legislation, organisational procedures and codes of practice including manual handling and use of equipment
- water regulations and hygiene procedures related to ensuring the integrity and wholesomeness of water supplies, including the importance of personal hygiene
- relevant information about quality standards and accuracy to be achieved from industry standards, manufacturers’ instructions and specifications, company procedures, codes of practice
- how to interpret work instructions, drawings, water company design and construction specifications and related specifications
- type and complexity of assembly to be produced
- the characteristics of polyethylene (PE) and barrier pipes and appropriate assembly methods and techniques to be used
- the need for quality control procedures
- relevant types of handling equipment and procedures
- preparation techniques for simple rigid and non-rigid pipe jointing
- the tools and equipment required for assembly and the importance of looking after them
- approved procedures for dealing with and reporting problems, including when pipes are not in a useable condition
