Overview

This standard takes place within the manufacture of explosives, substances and / or articles and covers the competences you need to move materials within the explosives process in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

You will be required to demonstrate that you can confirm that the equipment to be used is in a safe and functional condition, deal promptly with any problems that arise, reporting any that you cannot solve in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves Ordnance, Munitions or Explosives (OME) work activities..  This includes those working as test and evaluation, manufacturing, maintenance, disposal and general explosives operators.    

This standard replaces COGESA4.05.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines

P2 confirm that you have the required materials

P3 prepare the materials correctly for transfer and or use in the processing

P4 confirm that the equipment to be used is in a safe and functional condition

P5 deal promptly with any problems that arise, reporting any that you cannot solve

P6 dispose of waste in accordance with your organization’s procedures

P7 transfer unused materials to designated areas for reprocessing, storage or disposal, and label accordingly

P8 complete correctly the required documentation


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the health, safety and environmental and other statutory legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures governing explosives and their implications for your area of work

K2 the relevance of personal protective equipment (PPE)

K3 work area hazards

K4 the actions to be taken in response to an unplanned event

K5 the nature of the materials being processed

K6 the importance of adhering to explosives compatibility procedures and explosives limits

K7 methods of loading, unloading and transferring materials

K8 the functions and uses of the different types of equipment used in moving materials

K9 how to handle equipment safely in ways that protect yourself and others from risk

K10 the corrective action to take on discovering defective conditions, materials and or equipment

K11 the types of equipment problems that can occur, and how to recognize and deal with them

K12 your organization’s procedures for waste disposal

K13 the documentation requirements
