Overview

This standard take place within the manufacture of explosives, substances and / or articles and covers the competences you need to prepare the explosives process area and equipment in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

You will be required to demonstrate that you can ensure that you have the process instructions detailing the work to be carried out, dealing promptly with problems, reporting any that you cannot solve and/or are not your responsibility in accordance with approved procedures and practices.

This activity is likely to be undertaken by someone whose work role involves  Ordnance, Munitions or Explosives (OME) work activities. This includes those working as manufacturing and general explosives supervisors.        

This standard replaces COGESA4.04.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety, environmental and other relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines

P2 ensure that you have the required authorization to proceed

P3 ensure that you have the process instructions detailing the work to be carried out

P4 comply with the process instructions

P5 confirm that you have the correct tools

P6 ensure that the process area is cleared of all unnecessary equipment

P7 clear and clean all residual materials and or waste from the area to the required standard

P8 re-assemble equipment ready for the next operation when required

P9 ensure that all equipment is confirmed as being clean and operational

P10 confirm that the area is in a suitable condition for the next activity

P11 deal promptly with problems, reporting any that you cannot solve and or are not your responsibility

P12 explain to relevant personnel about any problems and the current status of the equipment

P13 complete correctly the required documentation


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

K1 the health, safety and environmental and other statutory legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures governing explosives and their implications for your area of work

K2 the relevance of personal protective equipment (PPE)

K3 work area hazards

K4 the actions to be taken in response to an unplanned event

K5 the nature of the materials being processed

K6 the importance of having the necessary authorization to proceed

K7 the process instructions for the work to be carried out

K8 the importance of identifying the correct equipment to be prepared

K9 the equipment layout and connection to other systems

K10 the importance of using the correct preparation method appropriate to different pieces of equipment

K11 the importance of dismantling and reassembling equipment correctly

K12 how to recognize when there is a potential problem

K13 the limits of your responsibility

K14 reporting procedures

K15 the requirements of the documentation
