Overview

This standard is about promoting a healthy, inclusive and psychologically safe working environment through everyday leadership behaviours, interactions and team practices. You role-model behaviours that support wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety, encourage open participation and create conditions where colleagues feel respected, able to contribute and supported to work sustainably. You promote healthy working practices, reduce barriers to participation and support colleagues to take shared responsibility for a positive working environment. You monitor cultural conditions and use feedback to strengthen how wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety are promoted over time. 

This standard applies to managers and leaders at all levels across all sectors.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Assess factors that influence wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety within your area of responsibility to identify strengths, risks and opportunities for improvement. 
  2. Promote everyday behaviours and working practices that support wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety. 
  3. Role-model behaviours that support wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety in everyday interactions to promote trust and positive cultural norms. 
  4. Create conditions that enable colleagues to share ideas, concerns and perspectives openly to support inclusive participation and psychological safety. 
  5. Reduce barriers that may affect colleagues’ ability to participate, contribute and work sustainably. 
  6. Promote healthy working practices and sustainable workloads to support wellbeing, prevent avoidable harm and maintain effective performance. 
  7. Encourage colleagues to raise concerns, share feedback and seek support where this would strengthen wellbeing, inclusion or psychological safety. 
  8. Signpost colleagues to relevant information, resources or support that can help them participate fully and work sustainably. 
  9. Enable colleagues to adopt behaviours that promote wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety to support shared ownership of a positive working environment. 
  10. Monitor cultural conditions, working patterns and behaviours to identify emerging issues and opportunities for improvement. 
  11. Challenge behaviours that undermine inclusion, respect or psychological safety in a fair, timely and proportionate way, in line with organisational procedures. 
  12. Share relevant information about themes, risks or concerns through appropriate organisational routes to support learning and improvement. 
  13. Provide information, guidance and resources that help colleagues maintain their own wellbeing and contribute to an inclusive, psychologically safe environment. 
  14. Work with relevant colleagues or teams to strengthen healthy, inclusive and psychologically safe working practices. 
  15. Evaluate the effectiveness of actions taken and identify opportunities to strengthen how wellbeing, inclusion and psychological safety are promoted.
